About Heather

I am an award-winning journalist who is passionate about finding the truth and reporting it. Before my undergrad studies, I worked for a small publishing house as an editor. I even had the honor of editing my mentor's book—the student did become the teacher in this case. Although unable to attend, I was accepted into Columbia University's prestigious graduate program in journalism after earning and maintaining a 4.0 in my undergraduate studies. Using my reporting, essay, and creative writing skills I won enough money in scholarships to entirely fund my final two years at MSU Denver. I would be honored to share those skills with you to help. I am compassionate and understanding. When my students need help, they are never afraid to ask as I give them a strong foundation for critical thinking and accepting feedback without discouragement. In fact, my students are highly encouraged to ask for clarification when needed. When our time is done, you will be prepared to tackle your next project, assignment, or exam and many more to come.

About the lesson

Extra! Extra! Read All About It! Although journalism technically began in 59 BCE, it became closer to the news we see presented today with weekly papers in the 1600s. Initially, journalists took a stance and presented it in their articles—a frowned upon act today, even if you see it in our media. *Seek and Report the Truth I will guide you through the entire process of writing an article, beginning with how to find a relevant story to report on. From there you'll find sources and write interview questions, preparing for follow-ups based on their responses and how to incorporate them into your story with the appropriate citations. Next, you will learn how to write a captivating headline, and a lede that will keep your readers' attention following the entirety of the story, following AP Style and the SPJ code of ethics. Additionally, we will review and edit your article, preparing it for publication. If you don't need the entire process, I can aid you in polishing your story before sending it to your editor. One of the most important parts of the process is learning to be critical and accepting constructive criticism yourself; come ready for feedback.
