About Jack

I am a dedicated percussionist and educator currently studying Percussion Performance and Music Education at the University of Michigan’s School of Music, Theatre & Dance, one of the top music schools in the country. My musical journey has taken me from earning First Chair Percussion in the Maryland All-State Orchestra (2023) to performing internationally with UMich’s top orchestra, including tours to South Africa and a concert at Carnegie Hall. Since 2017, I have also been the drummer for the rock band Karousel, performing regularly and recording original music. This wide range of experience—from elite classical ensembles to high-energy rock shows—gives me a unique perspective as a teacher, allowing me to guide students through multiple styles and performance settings. I bring the same professionalism and focus to my lessons that I bring to the stage: clear communication, structured learning plans, and a genuine passion for helping students succeed. Whether you’re learning your first rudiment or preparing for a conservatory audition, I will meet you at your skill level and help you achieve your musical goals!

About the lesson

Hi! I’m a percussion performance and music education student at the University of Michigan’s School of Music, Theatre & Dance. I’ve been performing and teaching for years—whether on classical percussion or drum set, I love helping students discover their sound and build real confidence. A little about me: - Equally comfortable in orchestral, solo, and contemporary/rock settings - Frequent performances with U-M’s renowned ensembles - Performed at prestigious venues including Carnegie Hall and Cape Town City Hall - Drummer in the rock band Karousel since 2017 - First Chair Percussion, Maryland All-State Orchestra (2023) My teaching approach: I believe in building a strong technical foundation while keeping lessons creative, engaging, and tailored to each student’s goals. I focus on: - Proper technique and posture to prevent injury and improve sound - Musical expression: playing with confidence, emotion, and clarity - A balance between reading, listening, and improvisation skills all depending on the student’s interests - Connecting exercises to real-world playing situations Lesson structure A typical lesson with me can include anything from learning your favorite song on the drums to perfecting your latest marimba solo.
