My Approach to Private Tutoring
My approach to tutoring is centred on making complex concepts easier to understand, developing critical thinking skills and helping students achieve their academic goals. With a background in Commerce and Law, an LLB, and ongoing postgraduate specialisation in Commercial Law at the University of Cape Town, I bring a multidisciplinary perspective to my lessons.
I believe that effective tutoring goes beyond memorising information. My teaching methodology focuses on understanding fundamental concepts, working through practical examples, identifying knowledge gaps and developing the confidence to apply knowledge independently. I adapt each lesson to the student's learning style, current level of understanding, syllabus and academic objectives.
Subjects I teach
My tutoring areas include undergraduate Law, Commercial Law, Economics, Accounting, Business Management and selected Finance subjects. I also offer school-level support in English, Literature, History, Geography, Economics, Accounting and Mathematics, as well as selected science topics. My school tutoring is suited to learners following relevant Cambridge O-Level and A-Level syllabuses, depending on the subject and level.
For law students, I focus on understanding legal principles, interpreting cases and legislation, applying the law to factual scenarios, structuring legal arguments and preparing for examinations. My particular academic interests include Company Law, Contract Law, Insolvency Law, Intellectual Property Law, Cyberlaw and financial regulation, including cryptoasset regulation.
For Economics and Accounting students, I emphasise clear explanations, step-by-step problem-solving, worked examples and practice questions. For English, Literature and Humanities, I focus on comprehension, critical analysis, essay structure and effective examination techniques.
What to expect from a typical lesson
Each lesson begins with identifying the topics the student needs help with and assessing their existing understanding. We then work through the relevant concepts using clear explanations, examples and guided exercises. I encourage students to ask questions, explain their reasoning and attempt problems independently. We conclude by reviewing the key learning points and identifying areas for further practice.
Lessons can be tailored to upcoming examinations, assignments, difficult topics or longer-term academic improvement. My goal is to help students become more confident, organised and independent learners.
**Who my lessons are for**
I work with secondary school learners and university students, particularly those who want to strengthen their understanding, improve examination technique or develop stronger academic skills. I can adapt lessons to different learning needs and levels, provided the subject and syllabus fall within my teaching competence.
Languages
I am proficient in English, isiXhosa and Shona and can provide tutoring in these languages where appropriate to the subject and the student's needs.
Ultimately, I aim to create a supportive, structured and engaging learning environment in which students feel comfortable asking questions, tackling difficult concepts and working towards measurable academic progress. Every student has different strengths and challenges, and I tailor my approach to help each learner make the most of their potential.
