About Patrick

I’ve been involved with music since the age of six while studying classical music and performing in various venues such as The Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall and Strathmore Mansion. At age 13, I began to learn hit songs by ear that I heard on Pandora Radio. This led to my wide range of repertoire that included pop, funk, blues, jazz, r&b, hip-hop, gospel, neo-soul, and more. After my fifth live audition at Berklee College of Music, I received a $21,000 scholarship to attend. I graduated Magna Cum Laude and studied piano while majoring in Electronic Production & Design; along with taking music business, entrepreneurship, songwriting, and music education courses. My passions now lie in sound design, music production, and teaching.

My remote teaching setup includes Zoom, Sony A6400 camera, CamLink4k, Spotify, MuseScore, Loopback, MIDI Keyboard, and VMPK to share the notes I am pressing down on a keyboard in realtime. I have a nice home studio setup that I have been building for years now.

My philosophy on teaching is this; pay attention to your student and the direction they WANT to move towards. Be there to guide them and tell them about certain resources that can help them in their field. For example, I had a jazz piano teacher and I wanted to learn how to improvise and develop musical vocabulary. Then he introduced me to the teachings of Dr. Barry Harris and it was exactly what I was looking for. Knowing what a student is looking for is invaluable. Music should also be fun and interactive. A lot of music students have no outlet to perform/play with other musicians. So just jamming with your students is very practical.

I prefer to teach students moveable do rather than fixed do. When a student listens to a song, they should hear intervallic relationships. They should hear where the tonic. Unless a student has perfect pitch, they will not be able to identify the pitch names (Bb, C#, D, etc). Moveable Do is more practical since in our everyday listening, we have no pitch reference, so we should be focusing on what is tonic and the relationships between notes.
There are a few ways that I teach chord progressions. A great way would be to develop a repertoire that is in line with the students’ musical interests. For example, I have a student who is a 15-year-old classical pianist who wants to learn pop music (much like me when I was her age). Because she likes pop music, I compiled a list of the most common chord progressions in pop music. I made a Spotify playlist and transcribed some chord progressions for her to practice. Learning and practicing chord progressions are a great way to develop your ear in a certain genre.

Another approach that is more reliant on your ear, would be to play a chord and sing each note. This is a very different approach that yields different benefits. Being able to hear the individual notes within a chord is a great skill to have. Harmonic ear training is very hard, so starting off with diads, then triads, then seventh chords is a good way to develop this skill.

I just finished my time at Berklee and graduated with a degree in Electronic Production & Design. I loved Berklee’s theory and ear training curriculum for being so unique and advantageous. I tested into Theory 4, Ear Training 4, and tested out of both levels of Tonal Harmony. I hope you consider me for this position. I have a great ear and a love for music education!
