About Joy
I used to be an English language tutor to international students for a year while I was in Newcastle University for an exchange programme. My students were second language learners of English, from Japan and Taiwan.
I have technical and practical knowledge in teaching languages (Syntax, Phonetics, Writing Structure and Psycholinguistics to understand how first and second language users learn the target language and ways to solve their challenges) due to my Bachelor's Degree in Linguistics.
I also have working experience in International Relations and Policy which requires a strong command of English and Mandarin in organisation bilateral meetings and agreements.

I'd be happy to give lessons to adult learners and international students to teach either English or Mandarin.
I would first like to have a phone conversation with you and where possible, a sample of your written work/essay for me to assess which aspects of the target language needs improvement and help. In talking to you and your language background, I would also be able to understand what are the challenges hindering you from understanding aspects of learning the language (e.g. aspectual meeting, wh-constructions, appropriation of lexicon and formulating clauses etc.)
I believe everyone has the potential to master a language with the right tweaks and understanding the cognitive process of parsing thoughts into sentences and verbal expressions. As such, my style is to understand your difficulties and try different ways of practising the language and learning how to use it in different social contexts.
Language use in professional and informal settings varies, hence it is especially important to get it right for social interactions and at the workplace. As your tutor, I hope to help you gain better awareness, mastery and confidence in expressing yourself.

Perfect! Joy is a patient and skilful tutor. She organises comprehensive lessons and is very capable of understanding how a student can learn best. I recommend Joy to any student that was to improve any aspect of their Mandarin!
- Gon is a very motivated student and I'm really pleased to teach him because I really want my student to walk away absorbing the most of each lesson. He exhibits clear determination and purpose in wanting to improve and excel in Mandarin which is very inspiring. I would recommend him to have more listening activities so help him learn more vocabulary. Reading some basic articles with the romanisation/han yu pin yin would also help him greatly to master more grammatical structures to express himself.Joy's response :
