  • When did you develop an interest in your subject and in private tutoring?

I've always enjoyed helping others with subjects I found interesting, particularly English and Maths. My interest in tutoring sparked during my early years in university when I began helping classmates understand challenging topics. Seeing them grasp difficult concepts was incredibly fulfilling, and I quickly realized I had a knack for explaining things in ways others could understand. This experience laid the foundation for my career in private tutoring, where I could offer more personalized support to students and help them unlock their potential.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach English and Maths to primary and intermediate phase students, including students who speak different languages. I especially enjoy diving into literature and creative writing, as it opens up rich conversations about human experience, culture, and imagination. With Maths, I find problem-solving and logical thinking incredibly satisfying, as these skills build a solid foundation for students' futures.

In terms of challenging areas, grammar drills in English can be a bit repetitive, but they're essential for clear communication. I always try to make these areas more engaging with practical examples so students understand the real-world applications.
  • Did you have any role models? Perhaps a teacher that inspired you?

Yes, I was fortunate to have a high school English teacher who was incredibly passionate about literature. She encouraged us to view each story as a window into another world, helping us develop empathy and open-mindedness. Her dedication and genuine love for teaching made me realize how impactful a good teacher can be. I try to bring that same passion into my lessons, aiming to inspire students to think beyond the textbook.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

To be a successful tutor, I believe you need patience, adaptability, empathy, and a genuine passion for teaching. Patience is key, as every student learns at their own pace. Adaptability allows you to adjust your teaching methods to match each student's unique learning style. Empathy helps you understand the challenges students face, especially when they're struggling, and a passion for teaching is what makes each lesson engaging and rewarding for both tutor and student. I also find that building confidence in students is crucial; when they believe in their abilities, they perform better and are more motivated to learn.
  • Could you share an anecdote related to your subject or your student days?

Once, I was working with a young student who struggled with reading. At first, he was shy and hesitant, but as we read more stories and I encouraged him to ask questions, he became more comfortable. Over time, his reading fluency improved dramatically. One day, he excitedly told me about a book he had read on his own, which was a huge moment for both of us. Witnessing this transformation is one of my most memorable moments as a tutor, and it keeps me motivated to help other students achieve similar breakthroughs.
  • Did you face any difficulties at school or university?

Yes, in university, I found it challenging to balance a demanding course load with my tutoring sessions. It was a learning experience in time management and prioritization, teaching me the importance of structure and planning. These skills have carried over into my tutoring, where I help students develop similar habits, as they're invaluable in both academics and life.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general, an element of this particular subject, or something completely different?

Teaching is my primary passion because it's so rewarding to witness students grow and succeed. I'm also passionate about continuous learning. Whether it's learning a new language, exploring literature from different cultures, or advancing in mathematics, I'm constantly expanding my own knowledge. This passion for learning keeps me connected to what my students are experiencing and motivates me to be the best tutor I can be.
  • What makes you a Superprof?

What makes me a Superprof is my dedication to each student's success. I've built strong relationships with my learners, and their progress is my biggest motivator. My approach is student-centered, with personalized plans that cater to each student's strengths and weaknesses. I constantly look for ways to improve, and with over six years of experience, I've developed effective strategies for teaching students from diverse backgrounds and language proficiencies. I'm proud of the positive feedback I receive from both students and parents, which inspires me to continue delivering quality tutoring.
