Mr Dear has taught me history for around two years now and always finds ways to make lessons exciting and engaging while ensuring that we are covering everything we need to know. He is always pushing us to improve our essays, deepen our understanding and challenge ourselves. He has been a great A level teacher!

Colin was previously my manager (head of history). There are four distinctive features of his teaching. Firstly, while his lessons are revolved around maximizing grades, he often takes a creative approach to make things interesting and easier to understand and remember. For example, he’s taught me to use mnemonics when teaching the rise of Hitler (FEND: Fire, Enabling act, Night long knives, death of Hindenburg).

Secondly, he has strong communicative skills, given that he was previously a tour guide. This means that he can explain complicated history in a relatively straight forward manner.

Thirdly, he put a lot of effort into tailoring his lessons to meet the needs of each student. This could involve for example, simplifying the language if the student struggles with reading.

Finally, Colin’s passion for history permeates beyond the classroom. For example, he runs a YouTube channel where he explains GCSE history content!

Overall, he is an excellent teacher that has helped me improve my own teaching.
