About Charles

I am a British native-born English speaker with a typical middle-class, educated accent from the middle of the country, neither 'posh' southern nor excessively northern. After a long career as an executive creative director of large advertising agencies in London and Spain, I worked as a filmmaker, directing TV commercials in London, Eastern Europe and Miami. I won many awards in my career including three Cannes Gold Lions as a writer and director, most notably for a global spot for the Special Olympics starring a young man with Down's Syndrome. It was the long process of preparing this individual for his starring moment that first interested me in the subject of language acquisition. Another important factor was my experience working with professional actors on the hundreds of radio commercials I directed during my career in ad agencies. As a semi-retired person, I can treat the profession of accent transformation as something I choose to do because it interests me - so much so that I'm writing a book about it. I have four children, two of whom live with me, in a small town in Cheshire just south of Manchester in the North West of England, on the edge of the beautiful Peak District National Park

Over the last four years, I've completed 4,500+ hours of classes devoted entirely to accent development - including 1,300+ hours with Preply. The task of reducing (and ultimately eliminating) existing pronunciation errors and then developing a new British accent are two halves of the same challenge. The way we speak is a combination of techniques and habits learnt in early childhood and is therefore deeply embedded in the subconscious. The actual production of the sounds of speech are physical subroutines far more than they are intellectual or mental processes. This will obviously apply to a person's mother tongue. But because education in a second language often begins at junior school that also applies to that person's acquisition of English. What we are dealing with, in both removing the old accent and building the new accent, is reprogramming muscle memory. And the only way to modify such memory is with imitative and repetitive bodily action, using the tongue, lips, teeth and throat. Most accent students are well-educated adults, rather than small children, which allows the process to be short-circuited. Simple clear explanations and intuitive modelling allow students to rapidly understand the methodology and techniques of fluent British English. But, in the end, it's still true that the practical application of the theories is the only way to lose a heavy foreign accent. To make the most progress, it's always necessary to develop an awareness of the sounds you are making when you're speaking. In other words, training the ears to hear sounds - not just the words - speakers of British English are making when they open their mouths. As your teacher, I will be there to help you on this journey using my skill at identifying what sound errors you are making, and explaining how to fix them. And I'll be sharing with you some of my own special insights, and secret tips and tricks, that will help you make your English more fluent. Classes are scheduled at 55 minutes long (although they will often over-run!) and can take a variety of formats. These can include critiqued conversations, monitored reading of articles or poetry, or an exploration my large range of beautifully-realised teaching material. If there's a particularly tough issue to resolve then I will devise individual learning documents for us to work through together. Note that all class interactions and learning moments are recorded as screenshots and uploaded to your personal online folder at the end of class.
