About Gwen

I have taught English as a Second Language online for the past three years, with a particular focus on building conversational confidence, and perfecting an "American / Canadian English" accent. I have extensive experience and understanding of phonetics and phonology, which helps me work with students to perfect difficult sounds, and sound out new words accurately and confidently. I'm all about making learning fun & building a space where you feel comfortable making mistakes (which, spoiler: helps you learn even faster!), and building independence.

About the lesson

As someone who learned a second language up to bilingual proficiency, I understand how daunting and intimidating the process can be. I know firsthand that the best way to learn is to take a leap of faith and just SPEAK! Therefore, I teach with specific focus on building my students' confidence with focused, real-world conversational practice. I always specifically encourage complete-sentence speaking (ex. "Yes, I like cats. No, I don't want to eat a banana"), rather than simple answers (ex. "yes / no / red / what?"). By encouraging students to always speak with complete sentences, they build an innate and practical instinct and understanding of English grammar, that helps them quickly speak more fluently and confidently. I love encouraging students to express their personalities, relax, and have fun! Getting my students to feel comfortable is always a big focus, because it encourages them to take more risks and speak more! The more you speak, the faster you master a language. And I work with students to help them physically see how English sounds are pronounced and produced. By guiding them to think of the physical way they can make certain sounds, students are able to master challenging sounds more quickly. And this helps them speak with more confidence, too!
