About Gary

I’m Gary, an English language specialist and former Trinity and Cambridge ESOL examiner. I have taught English in Greece, Turkey, Japan, the Netherlands, Germany and France, as well as in Oxford and online. My experience covers General and Business English, IELTS and Cambridge exam preparation, and university academic English.

I hold the LTCL Diploma in TESOL (DipTESOL), a PGCE in TESOL and the Cambridge CELTA. My examining experience helps me explain what exam tasks require and give specific feedback on your performance.

My experience extends beyond individual lessons. I have designed courses for international students aged nine upwards and held academic leadership responsibilities, including designing General and Business English programmes and overseeing teaching. Working across countries, cultures and age groups has taught me to adapt lessons to the learner’s needs, interests and educational background.

I have worked with international learners from across the world, with different first languages and educational backgrounds. This helps me identify and address the particular language challenges you face, including pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary and listening comprehension. Wherever you come from, I adapt the teaching to your individual needs.

For General English, exam and academic learners, I draw on my teaching experience across seven countries, alongside my work in language schools and universities. I help you develop everyday conversation, understand what examiners expect and meet the demands of studying in English. This includes expressing and supporting your ideas, organising essays and reports, and contributing to seminars and presentations.

Alongside teaching, my background spans around 30 years across corporate training, leadership development and organisational work, including work with multinational companies in the Middle East. I also hold an MA in Human Resource Management and postgraduate diplomas in Psychology and Management. For professional learners, this brings an understanding of the situations in which you need to use English—from meetings and presentations to interviews and discussions with international colleagues.

Your goals guide our sessions. In speaking sessions, you do most of the talking, while I develop the discussion with you and give live feedback on pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary and clarity. You put corrections into practice immediately and receive brief written feedback afterwards. I create a supportive environment where you can try unfamiliar language and tackle challenging topics, building the confidence to express your ideas and speak with greater authority.

I have a current enhanced DBS check and up-to-date safeguarding and Prevent training.

My aim is to help you recognise your progress and use what you learn beyond the lesson.

My approach and teaching methods

We begin by agreeing what you want to be able to do. Lessons focus on your starting point, goals and the specific difficulties you want to overcome.

In speaking sessions, you do most of the talking. I ask follow-up questions, develop the discussion with you and give live feedback on pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary and clarity. You practise improved answers during the session, so that you use the corrections immediately.

For academic and exam tuition, we also work on reading, listening and writing, with feedback on the specific difficulties you encounter.

After each session, you receive a brief written summary of useful corrections, expressions and points to practise. We revisit these in subsequent sessions to help you retain and apply what you have learnt.

Lesson lengths and tuition blocks

Choose 30-minute rapid speaking sessions, 45-minute focused sessions or 60-minute lessons.

Five-hour blocks concentrate on one or two agreed priorities. Ten-hour blocks provide more time to develop your skills and apply them across different situations. Blocks can be arranged as regular tuition or an intensive programme before an exam, interview, presentation or university course.

At the end of each block, we revisit an agreed task—for example, an exam answer, a presentation, a conversation or a piece of writing—to assess your progress and identify your next steps.

The free first session lasts 30 minutes and includes a brief assessment, sample practice and discussion of your goals.

My qualifications and experience

I hold the LTCL Diploma in TESOL (DipTESOL), PGCE in TESOL and Cambridge CELTA. I am a former Trinity and Cambridge ESOL examiner.

My background covers General and Business English, exam preparation, university academic English, corporate training and leadership development in the UK and internationally.

I also hold an MA in Human Resource Management and postgraduate diplomas in Psychology and Management. I have a current enhanced DBS check and up-to-date safeguarding and Prevent training.

Who the lessons are for

I teach younger learners and adults, from beginner to advanced, online and face-to-face in Oxford. Depending on your starting point and goals, we can work towards:

• General English: keeping conversations going, expressing your opinions, understanding others and improving pronunciation.

• Business and professional English: participating in meetings, answering interview questions, explaining ideas and writing clear emails and reports.

• IELTS and Cambridge exams: developing fuller answers, improving accuracy, organising your writing and completing tasks within the time available.

• Academic English: structuring essays and reports, following lectures, contributing to seminars and giving presentations.
