About Callum
I graduated from the University of St Andrews with First-Class Honours in English and will shortly begin an MPhil in English Studies at the University of Cambridge.
Alongside my academic work, I have professional experience in literary publishing and criticism. My writing has been published in The London Magazine, where I have also worked as a submissions reader, and I have completed editorial work experience at The Times Literary Supplement. I am also the founding editor of Slow Burn, an independent poetry pamphlet supported by the T. S. Eliot Foundation.
Having spent the past several years studying, writing about and editing literature, I aim to bring the same close attention to a student’s work. My lessons are encouraging but rigorous, with an emphasis on helping students become more confident and independent readers and writers.

I teach English Literature and essay writing by focusing on the skills that make the biggest difference to a student’s work: close reading, the ability to plan and structure an argument, and a precise, mature writing style.
I help students extract meaning from texts and develop well-structured essays that are persuasive, compelling and genuinely their own.
Lessons are usually one hour and are tailored to the individual student. We might work closely through a poem or passage, plan and develop an essay, discuss a text and its context, or go through a piece of written work together. For exam students, I can also focus on timed essays, unseen texts, revision and exam technique.
I graduated from the University of St Andrews with First-Class Honours in English and am beginning an MPhil in English Studies at the University of Cambridge. My criticism has been published in The London Magazine, and I have editorial experience with both The London Magazine and The Times Literary Supplement. I also edit an independent poetry publication, which has given me considerable experience working closely with writers and their work.
I teach GCSE and A-Level students, as well as students preparing for university applications or looking to improve their academic writing. I am particularly happy to work with ambitious students who want to move beyond simply meeting assessment criteria and become more perceptive, independent readers and writers.
