I am a firm believer that in math we should strive for understanding more than memorizing!
A lot of my lessons utilize techniques from Peter Liljedahl's book "Building Thinking Classrooms". In his book he explores how understanding math does take critical thinking and time. Some ways I embrace this is I make sure there are multiple difficulty levels to whatever math standard you might be learning. That way all are challenged appropriately to truly learn and understand.
