About Mark
Hello! I teach literature and expository writing in Columbia University's Pre-College Programs, where I served for five years as Director of Faculty and Instruction. I hold a BA in English from Columbia University (Phi Beta Kappa, summa cum laude) and an MA in comparative literature from UCLA, where I first fell in love with teaching. Most importantly, I'm really good at making learning interesting and fun!

Mark creates lesson plans designed to address a student’s individual needs and encourage agency and independence. He helps students to develop their critical thinking skills, investigate big ideas, and reflect on learning in order to prepare for more challenging material.
As a teacher myself, I am impressed by Mark’s focus and organization as well as his imaginative approach to teaching. His passion for multiple subjects inspires students to develop effective problem-solving skills and make deeper intellectual connections, and his guidance gives them the confidence to work through challenges and do their best.Having worked with Mark at Columbia University, I can attest to his exceptional abilities as an educator. Mark is dedicated to helping students achieve their full potential, and his effectiveness is reflected in consistently positive evaluations from students. What sets Mark apart is his ability to meet students where they are in their learning process and guide them toward mastery of the course material. He goes above and beyond to ensure that students feel supported and motivated, which results in a dynamic and engaging learning experience.
I have served as the Director of Faculty and Instruction and directly supervised Mark. He has proven himself to be a talented instructor who provides rich classroom conservations and is known for his willingness to help outside of the classroom. His class was also noted as being similar to a college offering. I recommend him without hesitation as a tutor!
Mark is a very seasoned academic, teacher and brings a tremendous level of enthusiasm to the work with students. He makes very complex information digestible and interesting and has a dynamic approach to unpacking with students books or assignment. His communication outside of the session is really what makes his support sustianble and effective. He has worked with both my boys last summer -- currently in grades 9 and & 10 and competitive high schools--they entered their school year approaching complex books with novel strategies that they internalized in his summer sessions. Both my kids went into their school year confident readers with sharper analysis and writing skills. Effective, nice and extremely professional. I highly recommend him/
