About Lila

I have three years' experience working as a specialist outreach tutor in a medical PRU, providing one-to-one and home tuition to children suffering with chronic illness, anxiety and/or depression, who have been unable to make it onto the school site. This job has given me the opportunity to have in-depth, personal experience in educating young people with a wide range of SEND and SEMH needs. Specifically, I have been working closely with teenagers with ASD diagnoses, as well as extreme anxiety and depression. Predominantly, my role has been working with year 10s and 11s in preparing them for their GCSE exams. I have taught a wide range of subjects at GCSE level, including English, Art, Music, Film Studies and Religion, Philosophy and Ethics. I have had some wonderful success stories, with students exceeding their academic expectations (achieving grades 8s and 9s), as well as making social and emotional progress (e.g. talking and developing relationships with students who were previously mute, or taking students on school trips who were previously bound to their bedrooms). I have been working with some of the most difficult to engage students, many of whom have fallen through the cracks in the education system, and it has been amazing to experience them living these achievements, which at one point in their lives may have seemed completely unattainable

About the lesson

I take a creative and compassionate approach to teaching, and am sensitive to the fact that the classroom environment can be distracting and difficult to learn in. I understand the importance of passion and curiosity when it comes to learning, and I aim to make lessons memorable and fun. This way, I encourage my pupils to develop a deep and genuine interest which will carry beyond their exams and into their life beyond school. I usually consider the first lesson with a new pupil as both a chance for us to get to know each other, and a way of assessing where the pupil is at with the subject at hand. I am careful to learn as much as I can about each student, and modify my lesson plans accordingly to suit them individually. This is through setting tasks, creative activities and engaging in dialogue; asking specific questions to the pupil which might help them to join dots and reach conclusions on their own. I set creative challenges which help my pupils to better express and articulate themselves. When it comes to exam-focused tuition, I am rigorous with covering curriculum, ensuring that pupils have a clear understanding of all aspects of the exam. I plan ahead and aim to reinforce any other lessons they may be receiving, so pupils can feel more confident in the classroom. I am especially good at teaching students to cope with anxiety, which I have had to overcome myself.

Lila's lessons totally transformed her confidence. She is now keeping up with her class (and has even won some classroom awards for her poems!)

Within the first lesson Lila helped my daughter to write her own story, and now my daughter is enjoying reading much more advanced books, and writing stories and poetry all the time!
