About Ellen
Hi! I’m Ellen, a passionate and approachable tutor with a strong foundation in both Computer Science and Vocal Performance. I’m currently studying CS + Music at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, combining my love for logic and creativity in everything I do. As a tutor, I focus on making students feel confident, capable, and supported whether we’re debugging a tricky coding assignment or preparing for a vocal audition. I’ve worked with students of all ages and skill levels, from those just starting out to those looking to refine and push their abilities. My teaching style is structured but flexible: I always begin by understanding your goals and learning style, then tailor lessons to build skills step by step. I value patience, clear explanations, and creating a space where students feel safe asking questions. What sets me apart is my interdisciplinary perspective. I know how to break down complex technical topics and make them accessible, while also helping students tap into their expressive side through music. Whether you're preparing for an AP CS exam, building a coding project, learning a new programming language, or improving your vocal technique, I’m here to help you grow with clarity and encouragement.

I believe the best learning happens when the student feels seen, supported, and challenged at just the right level. My teaching style blends structure with flexibility. I change every lesson to the student's pace, interests, and goals. Whether we’re solving a tricky CS problem or refining a vocal phrase, I focus on building confidence through clarity, encouragement, and active practice. I emphasize conceptual understanding, not just rote memorization or technique, and incorporate regular feedback and goal-setting to keep students motivated.
For Computer Science (CS):
Warm-up (5 min): Quick review of previous material or a brain teaser
Concept Focus (15–20 min): Introduce or deepen understanding of a key concept (e.g., recursion, linked lists, OOP, or debugging strategies)
Practice (20–25 min): Work through examples, problems, or live coding together
Wrap-Up (5–10 min): Summarize key takeaways and assign optional review or project-based tasks
For Singing (Voice):
Warm-up (5–10 min): Vocal exercises to focus on breath support, placement, and range
Technique & Repertoire (30 min): Work on vocal technique through a selected piece (musical theater, classical, pop, etc.)
Musicality & Expression (10 min): Focus on interpretation, phrasing, and performance skills
Feedback & Next Steps (5 min): Review progress and discuss practice strategies
What Sets Me Apart as a Tutor
Interdisciplinary Insight: As someone trained in both CS and music, I bring a creative, balanced approach that blends logic and expression, ideal for students who learn in unique ways.
Strong Communication: I’ve worked as a TA, mentor, and collaborator across different age groups and cultural settings, so I know how to adjust my explanations and tone based on the student’s comfort and background.
Empathy + Encouragement: Students often tell me they feel more confident and motivated after working with me because I meet them where they are, without judgment.
Real-World Relevance: I draw from industry experience and academic projects, showing students how what they’re learning applies to internships, interviews, or audition.
