Is there any more daunting exercise to writers and non-writers alike than an 'about you' section? I'm 29 years old, I'm female, I was born in a quaint fishing village called Liverpool (har-har).
If I'd kept count of the amount of words read in my lifetime, I'd have expected the Guiness World Book of Records to have been in contact long ago - I'm a constant reader, from cereal boxes to my mother's antique shopping lists to every piece of fiction I can gobble down greedily. I'm not happy unless I'm writing, and I prefer to write in perfect misery.
I prefer to be informal where possible. The writing world is so saturated with the reptilian brain of 'better than/worse than'. To me, there's no hierarchy in writing, only 'my cup of tea/not my cup of tea'. There's always something to enjoy. Many writers will try to intimidate you with their staunch determination to appear to be a writer (are elbow patches still a give-away in 2022?).
I'd rather just be a little idiot who writes and reads and knocks cheerfully on your door one mid-afternoon to invite you into the church of our lord and saviour, the pen.

About the lesson

I've wanted to guide the creative writing endeavours of others, subconsciously since I would proof read my friends' various homework assignments and offer unwarranted synonym suggestions, and concretely since I read JD Salinger's De Daumier-Smith’s Blue Period - albeit focussed on art tutoring, but the sentiment was the same.
I'm a constant writer myself, but find myself to be a bit of a beef-brained student. And it's far more interesting reading and guiding the works of others, with all of their surprises.
I've never read and critiqued a piece of work that didn't have something valuable, something workable. Informally, I've been a creative writing tutor for 10 years, and these last 3 years I've been running a creative writing school in Liverpool.
Now, I'm working online and looking to offer my expertise. We'll start by looking at your influences, your genre preferences, your personal writing tropes and areas of frustration. There are techniques that delve right into the areas of psychology and the examination of human behaviour that are vital tools for a writer (I have a certificate in psychology) as well as the joy that is reading less-than-perfect fiction extracts from established 'authors' and analysing and rewriting.
What's most important about these sessions, is that they're tailored to you. Any form of learning and skill development must align with learning style, personality and enjoyment. My lessons are for anyone who wants to push past that fear 'Am I a writer, or am I imitating a writer?'.
I also have a TEFL degree and can guide writers whose second language is English and wish to strengthen their language skills alongside their ability to bend those skills creatively.
