About Marcus
I’ve worked across Canada and internationally as a curator, teacher, journalist and artist. I recently completed a contract with the Mann Art Gallery in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. In Prince Albert, I volunteered at the local Literacy Network where I tutored a high-achieving Sikh student working toward a college exam and a recent Vietnamese immigrant who needed basic English skills. Just before that, I worked at the University of Saskatchewan as Director of the Gordon Snelgrove Gallery and Curator of Public Programming and Participation. There I worked closely with students and faculty to help produce the highest quality exhibitions, the most coherent and readable artist statements and the most compelling publicity possible. I also taught art theory and history courses and regularly assessed visual content and critical essays. I hold an MA in the Social History of Art from Leeds University and a BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design University. I’ve taught courses in the history, theory and practice of modern and contemporary art at Carlton University, Concordia University and the University of Saskatchewan. I publish critical reviews and articles in several journals including Canadian Art, BlackFlash, BorderCrossings, and Galleries West among others. I was Artistic Director at SAW Gallery (Ottawa) and Director of the Allan Sapp Gallery in North Battleford where I curated an exhibition entitled: PORTRAITS: PAINTING, FACE-PULLING AND STORYTELLING (PDF available). Before accepting a position at the Art Gallery of Alberta in 2006, I was the art critic at the Montreal HOUR and Montreal Correspondent for Contemporary Magazine in London, England.

I believe the power of language contributes to clear thinking and genuine understanding. I start by listening to the needs and goals of the student and craft a program of lessons to usher them to success. I’ve worked with Masters students working on their theses and recent immigrants on elementary language skills. I love to meet people of all ages and cultures, and can make my skills available to anybody. Getting the top mark is critical but when it reflects real comprehension – it’s indomitable.
