About John
I have had an academic career which focused on chemistry, biology, and biobased materials. This involved studying for Bachelor of Science (Double major in Biology and Chemistry), followed by a Master of Science (First Class Honors, Main subject: Chemistry), and then a Doctor of Philosophy (a materials science thesis in the School of Engineering). During my postgraduate studies, I worked part-time in a variety of Teaching Laboratory Demonstrator roles. These roles involved supervising and demonstrating experiments for undergraduate students in science laboratories. This was mainly chemistry, though I have also taught some. Marking laboratory reports, worksheets, and tests was often part of those roles. In late 2019, I accepted a fixed-term contract at my University to become a Lecturer in Materials Science for three years. I taught to a wide range of different class sizes and academic levels. With the COVID-19 lockdowns and restrictions, we had to move teaching online. This gave me experience in coordinating online courses and teaching using online tools. Online lectures and Zoom tutorials became the norm over much of my three-year term. Often we needed to produce content and run activities for both face-to-face university courses and online options. I am currently working as a scientific consultant and have a volunteer role as a writer/editor. I can tutor in general science, chemistry, and biology at school and university level. I am keen to provide mentorship and advice to researchers and students working on scientific projects.

I was a university lecturer in materials science during the height of the COVID crisis, teaching both face-to-face and online.
During my career as a university-based scientist I was involved in mentoring research students, running teaching laboratory experiments, and marking for a range of science and engineering subjects.
I can provide online lessons (45 minutes to 90 minutes) to students from school students through to researchers working on scientific projects. I can also provide feedback on documents sent via email with follow-up video conference sessions to discuss the feedback and suggest improvements.
I have experience with experimental design, research planning, and preparing scientific publications.
With a broad scientific background, I should be able to provide general tutoring in biology, chemistry, and some other physical sciences and engineering subjects.
I have can also tutor in academic/technical writing, research skills, experimental design, and operating some types of software (spreadsheets, graphic design, referencing, and word processing).
