About Gokhan

I'm Dr Gokhan Guler. I've spent more than twenty years teaching, marking and examining at university level, I hold a PhD in engineering and computer science, and I'm an active machine-learning researcher at the University of Reading — so I've sat on both sides of the table: writing for peer review, and judging other people's work against a marking scheme. Alongside that I'm a Principal Data & AI Architect, which means the applied dissertations I supervise — AI, data, software, engineering, BIM, management — get checked against how things actually work in industry as well as against the literature.

I've delivered over 2,000 hours of one-to-one tutoring since 2017 to students at Oxford, Imperial College London, King's College London, UCL, Manchester, Bristol, Queen Mary, Westminster, Reading and Maastricht, among others. Many of them have graduated with a 2:1 or a First.

My method is the right questions, honestly answered: what are you actually claiming? what would convince a sceptical examiner? where's the evidence? I'm direct and sympathetic in equal measure, and I'll always tell you when a chapter isn't there yet — a supervisor who only says "great" isn't helping you.

Away from work you'll find me with my family, who are my biggest supporters in all of this.

I supervise dissertations, theses and final-year projects — undergraduate, MSc, MBA and PhD — in AI and data science, computer science and software engineering, engineering, architecture and BIM, and business and management. I do what a good supervisor does: sharpen the question, test the method, challenge the argument, and tell you the truth about a draft. You write it.

WHAT WE WORK ON

- Finding and framing the question — from a topic to a researchable question, scope and feasibility, and a proposal that gets approved first time.

- Literature review — searching properly (Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, your library), reading critically, synthesising rather than summarising, managing references in Zotero, Mendeley or EndNote, and Harvard, APA or IEEE referencing done right.

- Methodology — choosing and justifying a method: quantitative (surveys, experiments, regression, machine-learning pipelines), qualitative (interviews, thematic analysis), mixed methods, design-science and engineering projects; ethics applications; sampling and data collection.

- Analysis — statistics in SPSS, R or Python, machine-learning experiments done rigorously, interpreting results honestly, and the figures and tables that make a marker's job easy.

- Writing and argument — structure and signposting, academic register, paragraph-level argument, the abstract and the conclusion, editing your own prose, and written feedback on your drafts chapter by chapter.

- Viva, defence and presentation — anticipating examiners' questions, defending your choices, and presenting your project with confidence.

- Applications — personal statements and research proposals for postgraduate and PhD places, and business-school applications.

- Using AI tools properly — what your university's rules permit, how to use ChatGPT or Claude for searching and critiquing without breaching them, and why submitting generated text is a bad idea even where it isn't caught.

RECENT WORK
MSc dissertations in AI, data science and AI ethics, from pipeline to write-up · a PhD project in architecture and computer-aided design · engineering and BIM master's projects · management and finance theses · dissertation defence and presentation preparation.

HOW SESSIONS RUN
Online via Teams, Zoom or Google Meet, with written feedback on drafts between sessions. The usual rhythm is a planning session, chapter-by-chapter reviews as you write, then a full-draft read and viva preparation. The first (free) session is a diagnostic: where you are, what's due when, and what the plan is. I reply within a few hours and I'm calm under deadline pressure — I've marked and examined enough of these to know what the panel is looking for.
