About Kieran

I have been studying Ancient Greek for 9 years, and am currently doing a PhD (DPhil) at Oxford University in Classical Languages and Literature, which involves studying and teaching Greek to the highest level. I engage with a wide variety of Ancient Greek texts, and have experience with the underlying linguistic structures at work, giving me a technical understanding of Greek which makes the language easier to teach comprehensively.
In addition, I have lots of experience with several other ancient languages, including Akkadian, Sumerian, and Hittite.
I am an experienced online tutor, teaching people of different ages and levels of previous experience, with great success and satisfaction!

About the lesson

I offer flexible, personalised teaching to students, with a friendly yet professional tone.
Lessons can take two forms. The first, for more advanced students, consists of reading texts in the original language, and practising translation, and understanding how the language works as found in genuine texts. This method is used in classes I teach at Oxford itself.
The second type is teaching the language and its grammar. If you take lessons with me to supplement an official course of study, I am happy to work with you through your assigned textbooks and set texts. This avoids confusion from introducing material in different orders, while allowing you to receive more one-on-one attention and ensuring you can ask whatever questions you need to understand each topic fully. You will also get more experience working through exercises with direct feedback on your progress. I also provide my own materials when necessary or beneficial, to plug gaps in other sources.
A typical lesson of this sort might begin with looking at exercises done for homework on the previous lesson’s topic, before tackling new material; I gladly supplement materials with my own tips, based on my experience learning the language. This can take as long as needed, as I encourage students to ask as many questions as needed, so you never feel rushed. Lessons then conclude with a more guided set of exercises on the new material, before arranging homework.

Perfect! I have been taking ancient Greek lessons with Kieran for over two months. He is an excellent teacher who has a fantastic command of ancient Greek. He is also familiar with proto-Indo-European, which he helps me understand some of the irregular features of the Greek language. Kieran is a flexible tutor and he has been able to work with me despite my being in Australia with an 11 hour time difference. He is also open to trying novel and fun methods to practice the language, such as reading Asterix in ancient Greek and translating it to English. I highly recommend Kieran to any aspiring learners of ancient languages. Once I have mastered ancient Greek to our mutual satisfaction, I will certainly be returning to him for Latin classes - and I can think of no more glowing endorsement than that!
