About Music
# Biography
Born in Hong Kong, John Tasman began his clarinet studies during his secondary school years. He quickly demonstrated exceptional musical ability, regularly performing as a soloist and taking part in exchange performances across Europe and Asia. His achievements contributed to numerous awards for his school in solo, ensemble, and orchestral competitions.
Tasman continued his advanced musical training at the CNR de Cergy-Pontoise, specialising in clarinet performance and chamber music. He graduated with the highest honours, developing a strong foundation in both performance excellence and collaborative musicianship.
After returning to Hong Kong, Tasman established himself as an active performer, working as a contracted clarinetist with various ensembles and musical organisations. He served as principal clarinetist of the Gustav Mahler Orchestra of Hong Kong, as well as performing with the Hong Kong Wind Philharmonia and the woodwind quintet Viva! Pipers. He has also collaborated with Leap Performers Hong Kong and other artistic organisations in a variety of performance roles.
Passionate about innovation and musical exploration, Tasman has been actively involved in the creation of new performance projects. He was a founding member and instrumentalist of the multidisciplinary ensemble Music Pi, and a founding member and clarinetist of the innovative woodwind group Reed4ble, exploring new possibilities in ensemble performance and contemporary repertoire.
In 2016, Tasman founded the K622 School of Clarinet, where he serves as director and instructor. Through dedicated teaching and mentorship, he has guided students from beginner to advanced levels, many of whom have achieved outstanding results in examinations and competitions. His students have continued their musical development at leading institutions including the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Baptist University, and The University of Hong Kong. Some have further pursued their studies internationally at institutions such as the Manhattan School of Music, Sydney Conservatorium of Music, and Royal Academy of Music and Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama.
In 2019, Tasman founded the K622 Clarinet Ensembles and officially established it as an organisation in 2020, serving as its artistic director. Under his leadership, the ensemble has focused on expanding the possibilities of clarinet ensemble performance and promoting new works. The ensemble was awarded funding from the Hong Kong Arts Development Council for the project *“Crash & Explore – Commissioned and Performance Project for Clarinet Ensemble Works”*, which was successfully presented through a series of performances.
Throughout his musical journey, Tasman has been deeply influenced and supported by his teachers, including Joseph Yu and Professor Pierre Dutrieu, as well as by many mentors, colleagues, friends, and family members. He remains sincerely grateful for their guidance and encouragement.
Having recently relocated to the United Kingdom, Tasman is now based in Drayton, Norwich, where he continues his work as a performer, educator, and advocate for the clarinet.
