About Matty

Originally from Cardiff, I graduated from the Tonmeister course at the University of Surrey in 2019 before moving to London the same year. I've recently moved to my new studio in SW19 Studios where I work as a producer as well as drummer. My studio work has taken place at leading facilities including AIR Studios, Abbey Road Studios, Real World Studios, and Giant Wafer, giving me extensive experience in professional recording environments. Alongside this, I maintain an active career as a live drummer and have toured widely across the UK, Europe, and Canada. Performance highlights include venues such as Manchester’s Victoria Warehouse, London’s KOKO, and Cardiff’s Clwb Ifor Bach. This blend of formal training and real-world industry experience allows me to offer students high-quality, practical, and professional tuition.

About the lesson

My approach to tutoring is supportive, structured, and focused on developing complete drummers rather than just technical players. For new and younger drummers, I make lessons fun and engaging, disguising the theory side of learning so it feels musical and enjoyable rather than a chore. Core skills such as timing, coordination, technique, and feel are taught through songs, grooves, and creative exercises. A key part of my teaching involves recording students during lessons so they can see and hear their own playing. This helps them clearly identify areas for improvement, develop critical listening skills, and train their ear to practise more effectively between lessons. Sessions also cover performance skills, recording session preparation, and live gigging practices. Lessons typically last 60 minutes and take place at my studio in SW19 Studios. Alongside teaching, I continue to work professionally as a gigging and touring drummer, with experience performing across the UK and Europe. Because of this, lesson times are flexible and don’t need to be at the same fixed time each week. I teach students of all ages and levels, from complete beginners to advanced drummers.
