About Bertie
*Taking new students in Glasgow from 21 September*
Hi! My name is Bertie and I'm looking to inspire more computing and programming pupils for the 2026/27 academic year.
I was the top-performing student in my school for my GCSE cohort (including a 9 in Mathematics) and achieved straight A*s for my A Levels, which included Mathematics. I continued to Newcastle University to study Computer Science, where I graduated in 2025 with a First Class Honours degree, again winning an award as the top-performing student of my cohort and scoring 83% for my final dissertation on bacterial metagenomics. I have just finished an MSc Advanced Computer Science Master's at Durham University, where I have averaged 78% across all modules. My Master's dissertation concerns finding optimal walk algorithms through pangenome graphs.
Programming-wise, I am most experienced with Python, but also spend much of my degrees coding with Java, C, and R. My special interest lies in bioinformatics, but I'm also interested and knowledgeable in machine learning, AI, data science and quantum computing.

I start my time with each student with a free, no obligations 30 minutes session, where I find out where you are on your maths journey, and how I can take you to the lesson. From there I tailor each lesson to you specifically, working through programming examples on my own machine (if we're online or at my home) and carefully selecting example exercises to work on the parts of computing you find trickiest.
Computer science can be a scary, intimidating subject, but I make sure to always keep my lessons light, engaging and fun. My ultimate goal in my lessons is to inspire you to explore the wonderful world of computers, be it through coding your very own game or constructing your next gaming PC.

I have known Bertie for two and a half years as my son learned piano from zero until now with Bertie. He taught my son from each note until now my son has finished the ABRSM piano Grade 5 test this summer holiday. And my son got Distinction in Grade 1 and Grade 3. Bertie is a super good teacher; he is a professional and smart young man with enthusiasm for teaching piano. Each time my son had a tricky problem, he always had good ideas to solve it and helped my son to practice step by step. My son loved learning piano with Bertie very much.
