About Kelvin Ejumevwo

Hi! My name is Kelvin, an enthusiastic Math Tutor with a BSc in Physics, an MSc in Applied Mathematics, and extensive global experience. I've had the privilege of teaching hundreds of students from over 60 countries. My expertise spans a diverse array of curricula, age groups, and student needs—from young learners to university-level students, ranging from those struggling with the basics to contenders in national mathematics competitions, and everything in between. I help students develop qualities that extend well beyond their mathematics education. This includes enhancing their ability to think critically, reason abstractly, articulate thoughts concisely, develop sharp analytical skills, and apply knowledge across various contexts.

I start by assessing and reinforcing students' foundational understanding. Once this solid base is established, we can scaffold knowledge, delving deeper into complex topics and looking at them in a more thorough and enriching way. Finally, at the top end, the focus shifts to one of deep exploration, challenging problem-solving, and honing exam strategies. For most of the lesson, students will be solving problems, each problem presenting a different piece of the puzzle, until they reach that “aha” moment where they have mastered the concept. By asking a series of well-thought-out questions, rather than lecturing, I help students discover for themselves underlying misunderstandings that they may have and address them.

In addition to teaching, I specialise in guiding students to secure placements at the world’s most prestigious schools and universities. I also have a wealth of experience in mentoring students, preparing them for success in school, university, and their future careers. My unwavering commitment to excellence is evident in my track record. Most of my students have achieved or surpassed their target grades, with some advancing by as much as five grades. They regularly gain admission and scholarships to the world’s most prestigious schools and universities, and many have won accolades for their outstanding achievements, including securing top positions in national mathematics competitions.

I have been tutoring for 14+ years, specializing in high school math, GRE, SAT Math, and Calculus AB/Calculus 1. I have helped countless students raise their grades, increase their GRE Quantitative Reasoning scores by 50-100 points, and score a 4 or 5 on their Calculus AB exam. I love to help my students succeed in their classes and build confidence in their math skills.
I am very patient and encouraging with my students, which I believe are important traits for a tutor. I create a safe learning environment where my students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes without feeling flustered. When students have math anxiety, it becomes very difficult for them to learn. I can truly empathize with students who find math frustrating and daunting. Contact me to get started! Any questions, concerns, or feedback are always welcome.

  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My passion for mathematics began early in primary school, where I consistently excelled and earned the Best Mathematics Student award. In secondary school, I naturally stepped into the role of helping classmates who struggled with the subject, organizing free tutorials that quickly became popular. During my undergraduate studies, I continued supporting fellow students, and the appreciation I received reinforced my desire to make a positive academic impact. These experiences shaped not only my love for mathematics but also my commitment to teaching it effectively.
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach mathematics across various levels, from foundational concepts to more advanced topics. I enjoy guiding students through algebra, pre-algebra, pre-calculus, geometry, trigonometry, calculus, and problem-solving techniques because these areas allow me to show how interconnected and logical mathematics truly is. I particularly like discussing real-world applications of mathematical ideas, as they help students appreciate the relevance of what they are learning.
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

One of my undergraduate mathematics lecturers greatly inspired the teacher I have become. His classes were engaging, his explanations were crystal clear, and he made learning mathematics genuinely enjoyable. I rarely had to over-study for his courses because of how effectively he taught. His passion, clarity, and energy became the standard I strive to uphold in my own teaching.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

My success as a tutor is rooted in a blend of patience, passion, strong interpersonal skills, clear communication, punctuality, respect, and the ability to break down complex ideas into simple, relatable explanations. These qualities allow me to create a supportive learning environment where students feel confident, motivated, and capable of achieving excellence.
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

During my secondary school years, I had a classmate who consistently struggled with mathematics. No matter how many times teachers explained certain topics, she would still leave class discouraged. One afternoon, she came to me visibly frustrated after failing yet another test, so I offered to sit with her after school to go over the material at her pace.

We started with the absolute basics—breaking concepts down into simple, everyday ideas rather than formulas. That day, something unexpected happened: for the first time, she understood a topic she had been failing for months. I still remember the excitement on her face as she solved a problem correctly on her own.

From that moment, we began meeting regularly, and her confidence grew lesson after lesson. By the end of the school year, she not only passed mathematics but earned one of the highest improvement scores in the class.

That experience changed me. It showed me the power of patient, individualized teaching, and it was the moment I realized I wasn’t just good at mathematics—I was meant to teach it. Seeing a student transform from frustrated to confident became one of my greatest motivations and continues to inspire my tutoring approach today.
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

One of the major challenges I faced in mathematics was encountering teachers who focused more on speed and memorization than on real understanding. This often made complex topics feel overwhelming, not because they were difficult, but because they weren’t explained in a way that connected with students. Another challenge was the pressure to consistently perform at the top of my class, which required extra discipline, practice, and self-motivation. These experiences shaped my teaching style today: I prioritize clarity, patience, and building true conceptual understanding so my students never feel lost or afraid to ask questions.
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

Yes, I do have a particular passion, and it lies at the intersection of teaching and mathematics. While I genuinely enjoy mathematics as a subject, my deeper passion is teaching it in a way that changes how students feel about it. I am especially drawn to simplifying complex ideas and helping learners build confidence through understanding. What excites me most is not just solving mathematical problems, but guiding students to reach that “aha” moment when everything suddenly becomes clear. Teaching, for me, is both a calling and a joy—it allows me to share knowledge, inspire growth, and make a lasting impact on students’ academic journeys.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P)?

What makes me a Superprof is my commitment to truly understanding each student’s learning style and tailoring my teaching to meet their needs. I don’t just teach mathematics—I guide students step-by-step until they gain clarity and confidence. My track record of helping every student I’ve worked with improve significantly speaks to the effectiveness of my approach. I combine patience, strong communication, deep subject knowledge, and a genuine passion for teaching to create lessons that are both engaging and impactful. My goal is not only to help students excel academically but also to help them enjoy the journey.
