About Khadija

Hello everyone,

My name is Khadijah, I am a recent graduate from the University of Toronto where I specialized in psychology and neuroscience. I have had quite an interesting journey throughout my university degree having been a student in various universities such as Usask, Uwaterloo, and UofT. Throughout my years of transition between universities, I acquired valuable insights into degree strategies and stayed informed about the various perspectives maintained by students within my cohorts as they worked towards their goals. For example, I remember meeting someone in my first year of university who left an impression on me. She had moved to Saskatoon from Ontario to fulfill her dream of becoming a practicing physician. Although it was difficult moving to a different province alone, she now starting her clinical year in medical school at the University of Saskatchewan. Like her, I have met many students that came to university with a clear idea of where their path was going to head, similarly, I have met other students who took a while to figure out what they wanted to do.

Neither approach to one's university journey is above the other. However, I believe that students should have a full picture of their years at university before they go on to start this long chapter in their lives. My goal for my students will be to guide and allow them to explore their resources as students with an open mind. Being a student myself, I understand the importance of having accountability and personalized academic counseling for both secondary and post-secondary success.

My extensive experience in successfully securing admissions to three out-of-province universities at different university years has given me a deep understanding of various admission requirements. Achieving admission to professional programs can be a challenging endeavor. I firmly believe that a one-size-fits-all approach is not effective, and there are always strategic ways to craft a compelling application.

In my tutoring sessions, I collaborate closely with high school students who are planning to apply either in the early stages of grade 11 or later in grade 12. Additionally, I provide guidance and support to pre-med students seeking to establish a practical and attainable plan for their academic and career pursuits.

Here is an example showcasing my strategy and tutoring session that might occur for a student in this scenario:

Student X's Profile: He began high school strongly in grades 9 and 10. However, in a few of his math and science courses, Student X did not perform as well, and as a result, he currently maintains a CGPA of B-. Despite the challenges in science and math, Student X has excelled in English and business courses and aspires to pursue a commerce program at the University of Toronto (UofT). Nonetheless, the admission committee at UofT maintains stringent criteria, and the competition for this program is exceptionally fierce.

In our tutoring sessions, Student X and I will collaborate to compile a comprehensive list of potential university programs, carefully noting their specific admission criteria. Our initial focus will revolve around developing a structured plan for Student X to effectively showcase his extracurricular activities and other supplemental items within his application. I will guide Student X through the entire application process, and ensure that we take into account university-specific research, extracurricular opportunities, and program offerings to maximize his chances of successful admission and university life thereafter. Throughout the process, I will maintain a structured check-in system using various digital platforms to monitor Student X's progress and provide timely support.

My overarching goal in this tutoring endeavor is to prioritize student success at every step of the journey. For my pre-med students, the strategy will be tailored to create a clear timeline for essential milestones such as when to take the MCAT, how to prepare for CASPer, and when to start personal statement writing. We will also delve into specific school requirements to ensure that each student is well-equipped to meet their unique criteria.

Moreover, the tutoring sessions will emphasize thorough research and the identification of extracurricular activities that resonate with medical school admission committees. I will impart strategies for effective networking within the healthcare field, particularly with medical students, to facilitate valuable connections and insights. The ultimate aim is to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to excel not only in the admissions process but also in their future journeys within their chosen academic and career paths.
