My approach as a tutor is simple. There is no other way to learn other than by doing yourself. And that means you will make mistakes. I encourage the student to take chances, ask nonsensical questions and to fail occasionally. In my experience this gives people a strong foundation for learning in general which is useful for the rest of their life.
