About Casey

Casey O’Brien is an experienced improviser, composer, and bassist, bringing a wealth of knowledge and a unique perspective to every lesson. With a background shaped by a dynamic upbringing in the Twin Cities music scene and years of performance and collaboration across the globe, Casey’s approach to teaching is both professional and inspired. Having performed in a wide range of genres—from avant-garde jazz to R&B—Casey understands the importance of adaptability and expression in music. Their teaching method emphasizes improvisation, musical discovery, and a deep connection to groove and rhythm, ensuring that students not only develop strong technical skills but also find their own voice on the bass. Whether performing at international festivals like the Sons d’Hiver in Paris or crafting innovative sounds in Chiang Mai, Casey brings a sense of professionalism and artistic integrity to every lesson. Students are guided through each session with clear, actionable goals, fostering an environment where both technique and creativity thrive. Casey’s experience working with diverse musical traditions and cultures, combined with their deep commitment to the process of spontaneous creation, allows students to develop confidence in their own abilities and approach music with a sense of possibility and exploration.

About the lesson

My Approach

As a tutor, I focus on creating a personalized learning experience that adapts to each student's unique goals and musical style. I believe in a hands-on approach, helping students connect theory to practice in real-time. Each lesson is interactive, with a balance between technique, groove, and musicality.

Teaching Method & Techniques

I use a combination of improvisation exercises, ear training, and song analysis to develop a strong sense of rhythm and harmony. My teaching emphasizes learning to read and interpret music while also fostering creativity through practical application.

Typical Lesson Plan

A typical lesson starts with a warm-up focusing on scales and chord progressions relevant to the student’s style of music. Then, we work on a specific song or improvisation exercise. The lesson concludes with feedback and goal-setting for the next session.

What Sets Me Apart

My experience as a performing bassist in jazz, R&B, pop, and folk gives me a unique perspective on bass playing, allowing me to offer a well-rounded approach. I focus on groove and feel, helping students develop their personal voice on the bass.

Who the Lessons Are For

These lessons are for beginner to advanced bassists, from hobbyists to musicians looking to refine their skills in jazz, R&B, pop, or folk. Whether you're preparing for a performance or just want to deepen your musical understanding, these lessons are for you!
