About Catherine

I am an English Language Communication Coach for professionals and students. With 20 years of experience, I have worked with over 2000 students from 24 countries to improve professional and conversational English skills, attain advanced fluency, prepare for study abroad, work abroad, and travel. My program can help you reach your communication goals! Born in Berkeley, California, and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii, I grew up with a love of multiculturalism, a passion for language and cultural diversity, and a love of people and animals. I have lived in Costa Rica, Mexico, Canada and the US. Always a passionate lover of language and communication, and I believe that language has the power to heal, to win hearts, to bring us together. Multilingualism is a superpower! Jerry from South Korea first came to me as a PhD student getting ready to look for a job. He had worked hard on English, but he was frustrated when he couldn’t express himself and was not understood. He had tried dozens of things, but what he needed was a focused plan tailored to him, to find his weaknesses and systematically build those areas up, thus taking it to the next level. It was time for him to focus on training very specific language muscles and skills, tailored to his professional and personal life. While he had an extensive English vocabulary, he had low confidence to use what he knew. Also, people sometimes could not understand him, which made him more hesitant to speak up. While his listening comprehension was intermediate, he was too often lost in conversations when people used idioms or figures of speech. What we did in our program was to systematically address the parts (pronunciation, idioms), in the context of culture and his profession, and then practiced more expressive and sophisticated language. His communication skills grew, his confidence grew, and when he started interviewing in English, he left a polished, lasting impression, and received several offers. In the end, Jerry won the race, after our very specific training protocol. Now he is an English language Olympian! I offer one-on-one online English coaching from the privacy of your home or office, on your own time. Working with an experienced, native English language teacher is the most powerful tool for building fluency! I look forward to working with you!

About the lesson

My teaching approach is to build both skill and confidence, in a friendly, positive manner. All lessons are tailored to the individual's unique needs and interests, beginning with assessment of language gaps and weaknesses. By addressing these gaps and raising English fluency, my students improve their job performance, and secure future career and education opportunities, empowered to better understand and use professional and conversational English, including vocabulary, idioms, and expressions, and phrases. Their language comprehension is sharpened, and their speech is clear and on target.
