About Yuka

Hi, I’m Yuka! I was born and raised in Tokyo, so I speak standard, non-dialect Japanese. I started my language journey by moving to the United States for university, even though I couldn’t speak English at all at the time. Through my experiences there, I mastered English, and today, I live seamlessly with my Australian partner and his parents without any language barriers. (Of course, we’ve had many discussions, and we still do! I believe that true relationships are built through honest communication.)

I have over 13 years of experience in teaching and providing support, spanning my entire career.

While attending university in the US, I taught 3 to 4 Japanese classes per semester. My nickname back then was “Yuka-Sensei,” so feel free to call me that! After earning my degree in Linguistics, I returned to Japan and worked at the Apple Store while also teaching English. During this time, I developed strong communication skills and the ability to offer personalized, one-on-one support to meet diverse needs.

In 2017, I moved to Australia, where I have continued to provide personalized Japanese lessons as a freelance tutor. I currently live with my Australian partner, his parents, and our 4-year-old son. My experience adapting to a new culture has given me valuable insights into cross-cultural communication, which I incorporate into my lessons.

Recently, I have also studied coaching based on human behavioral science, learning how to help students effectively build their ideal skills and abilities. This has allowed me to guide learners more efficiently toward their goals.

My lessons are ideal for anyone who wants to connect more deeply with Japanese people, whether you're interested in learning the language to build friendships, improve communication with a Japanese partner, or understand cultural nuances for a stronger international relationship. I welcome students of all levels—from complete beginners to advanced speakers—tailoring each lesson to meet your specific needs and goals.

Customized Learning: Every lesson is tailored based on your goals, interests, and current level. We will focus on the areas that matter most to you, whether that’s casual conversation, formal business language, or cultural etiquette.

Real-Life Practice: Learning Japanese from textbooks has its limitations because we don’t use textbook sentences in real conversations. We will focus on practical, everyday Japanese that you can use right away, helping you sound natural and confident. Instead of strictly following textbooks, we’ll personalize the lessons to cover what you need. However, if you have a textbook or other study materials you’d like to use, I’m more than happy to incorporate them into our lessons!

Interactive Exercises: I believe in learning through interaction. We will use role-plays, real-life scenarios, and discussions on topics you’re interested in. This approach makes learning not just effective, but enjoyable.

Homework & Feedback: To reinforce your learning, we may assign homework that helps you practice and retain what we’ve covered. I also provide constructive feedback to help you improve and build your confidence.

Flexible Support: I can conduct lessons in both Japanese and English. If you’re a beginner, don’t worry—we’ll go at a comfortable pace, and I’ll explain concepts in English when needed. For more advanced learners, we can switch entirely to Japanese.

When I first went to the US, I couldn’t speak English at all. But by having lots of conversations with native speakers, I was able to improve my English. I’ve been where you are, and I understand the challenges of learning a new language. (Textbooks can help, but just a little. What truly makes a difference is building your vocabulary, practicing by using it in real conversations, and getting feedback to improve!)

Travel Fee Details: For in-person lessons, I can travel within a 50km radius. The travel fee is adjusted based on the distance:

Up to 10km: $20
Up to 20km: $30
Up to 30km: $40
