About Chase

I have been playing percussion since I was in 4th grade, and throughout that time I have been taught by music educators who I would consider to be of the highest caliber. These teachers have allowed me to become exposed to many different facets of percussion, and granted me the necessary tools in order to be able to teach percussion and music techniques with a high level of proficiency and effectiveness.

My musical experience spans over many years and is rooted in a rich family history of many great musicians, many of whom are or were professionals in the music industry. I began taking my own private lessons in 5th grade and continued them every week until I graduated from high school (thank you to my parents for that). Doing so allowed me to be exposed to an incredible range of musical styles, as well as being exposed to many different teaching styles. My private lessons focused on jazz and rock drum set, with some Latin thrown in occasionally, marimba and xylophone, timpani, and concert snare. Throughout my college life, I have been lucky enough to receive incredible teaching from the head of the percussion program and have further been expanding my toolbelt of percussion, focusing more so now on touch and sound.

I have been privileged to play in many ensembles throughout my musical life that have consistently required me to play at the highest level of musicality possible. From 6th grade until my senior year of high school, I played in my school's jazz band. My high school jazz band was consistently playing college-level charts that required an extra level of musicianship to be able to achieve. My experience also includes performing with many different percussion ensemble groups that have gone to perform at events like the WMEA Solo and Ensemble competition and the WorldStrides Performing Arts Heritage festival. For two years I also played with the Spokane British Brass Band, under the direction of my former lesson instructor. My experience also ranges into marching percussion as well. I have played marching percussion since I was in 6th grade, performing with the middle school parade band, the high school marching band where I held a section leader position for 2 years, and then the UW Husky Marching band for 2 years. I have also performed in the Drum Corps setting for 4 years, marching with the Columbians Drum and Bugle Corps since 2015-2017 and then again in 2020.

Throughout my musical life, I have been honored to receive multiple awards in competition settings that were a testament to my musical abilities. I received the Maestro award at the 2017 WorldStrides Heritage festival for being a top musician out of almost 1,000 total musicians at the festival. I was graciously awarded the 2nd highest jazz performer award at my high school during my 4 years of performing. During the 2017-2018 school year, I had the great opportunity to perform at the WMEA Solo and Ensemble Competition and on timpani and in a percussion duet. For my performance on timpani, I was awarded second place at the competition, receiving three 1+ ratings. For the percussion duet performance, we were awarded three 1+ ratings. Lastly, in 2018 I was selected to perform in the WMEA All-State music program and was selected to perform with the highest ensemble available. This was a great opportunity for me to learn from incredible instructors and play with the best musicians in the state of Washington.

My teaching experience has allowed me to teach two separate students, both on percussion. I started teaching both of these students at a very young age and was able to quickly watch them improve in terms of musicality and ability. Throughout my time as a section leader in high school in both the marching band and the advanced percussion ensemble, I was put into a position that required me to hold a high standard for myself, as well as everyone in the ensemble. I was put in a leadership position where I was expected to help fellow students by teaching them music, marching techniques, or life skills through music.

I am confident that my abilities and experience will allow me to teach any student of any level and be able to help them reach the next level of musicianship, as well as helping them grow personally through music.

Every student should, and will, receive their own personal approach in these music lessons. Beginning students will learn the fundamentals of percussion technique first, as a good technique is what allows the most beautiful sound to be achieved. Only after a good technique is established will the incredible music-making process begin. Students in the intermediate and above levels will be analyzed during the first lesson or two in order to allow myself and the student(s) time to see where to begin. Each student will receive detailed feedback on what they can improve on in order to reach the next level of greatness in their journey as a musician.
