About Katie
As a certified educator for 15+ years, I've had a unique variety of educational settings in which to observe, analyze, and encourage students from a wide range of backgrounds.
Specializing the last 7 years in SAT / ACT Test Prep, I offer cheerful, patient, real-life teaching to help kids get "un-stuck" in their pathway forward towards college.
I taught in a (truly wonderful) high school classroom until my own children were born, and then began part-time teaching as a way to fulfil both my own passion and make room for the needs of my children. The surprise for me was how much I *LOVE teaching in small groups or private tutoring! It's truly the best part of teaching & the best part of learning, to customize an approach to fit that one exact kid and the thing he is trying to do.
I have both a bachelor's and a master's degree in secondary education, but my REAL skills have come from years of teaching small groups and one-on-one tutoring students exactly how to do the things they're trying to do.

Many students benefit from a short 30-minute goal-setting session before we begin the more intense focused tutoring. In the goal-setting meeting (parents welcome to attend!), we'll discuss the student's past experience with the SAT or ACT, the student's specific goals, and what kind of a learner / test taker the student is. I'll assign some homework that will be due by the first session, and then we'll dive in from there.
In a typical tutoring session, we'll do 2 things at once: correct errors from the student's homework, and ALSO generalize that particular question into a "type" question (because both the SAT and ACT usually ask repeat-style questions with different numbers / paragraph structures). When a student can recognize the TYPE of question causing trouble, (s)he can make corrections and start to see those scores moving right up.
We'll know we have hit the target when we meet or surpass the goals set in that initial goal-setting meeting!
I have experience with a wide variety of student profiles: gifted students applying to selective schools, English-language learners doing all of this work in a 2nd or 3rd or 4th language, athletes balancing their academic pressures with crazy-busy practice and game schedules, students who have worked hard in school for good grades and now need those test scores to match.
My advice to a student looking to hire an SAT or ACT tutor is to know as much about your own learning style as possible; come to the tutoring session with specific goals and questions, and be willing to work hard.
Our family recently adopted a rescue dog named Samwise, and I am thoroughly enjoying getting to know him and introducing him to our family and area.

My first goal-setting 30-minute session is FREE, and then my rates are $60 / hour, typically for 2-hour sessions. (The SAT and ACT both are nearly 4 hours long, so it's actually better for students to have longer tutoring sessions as a practical way to build attention span.)
