About Kristin
I am an extremely patient person and my number one priority is making the students feel comfortable enough to express any concerns that they have with open and honest communication. I also like to individualize each student's learning plan to meet their needs to the best of my abilities.
I think tutoring is a very rewarding job and I love helping students overcome educational obstacles and make learning a fun experience for them!
My grandmother and mother were always teachers when I was growing up and they specialized a lot in 1-on-1 tutoring and teaching specific subjects and skills such as Art, Music, Math and English. Watching them, I always looked up to them and what a great difference they would make in these children's lives by helping them progress and feel more confident, so I knew it was something that I felt passionate about and wanted to be a part of.
I have tutored for over 8 years (volunteered for community service the first 2 years) and over 6 years of tutoring children at Elementary & Middle Schools as an Education Assistant and tutoring private clients both 1-on-1 and group settings. I have my High School Diploma & Bachelor's Degree with a major in Biology and minor in Geography.

First, I like to get to know the student on a little bit more of a personal level. I will ask basic questions about school and their learning experiences. Next, I will do some brief exercises on the certain subjects they are asking for help in, in order to get an idea of where they are at and how much progress needs to be made to get them to a comfortable level for their grade. After I have an idea of the student's abilities and the aspects they need to focus more on, I set up an organized plan to keep them on track with homework, studying and tutoring in order to be efficient without overwhelming the student. Meanwhile, I continue to make changes in the plan or my approach as needed to meet the needs of the student.
I have worked with students of many backgrounds from the ages of 4-13, in Preschool, Kindergarten, Elementary and Middle Schools.
The best advice I could give to a student looking for any type of tutor is to make sure you first and foremost feel very comfortable with the tutor in order to be able to express any concerns and to also have open and honest communication with them.
I recently received a phone call by the mother of a student I used to teach 3 years ago when he was in 1st grade, asking me if I would be willing to work with her son for a few days for a specific exam he was worried about. He has expressed how comfortable he felt working with me and how he enjoyed the way I would explain certain topics to him because it was easier for him to understand. It was very rewarding knowing that I had made a positive difference in his learning experience while working with him. We studied together for a few days and he went on to received a very high grade for the exam that he had been so worried about. I was very proud of him and the great tutor & student team that we had become.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Some questions I would advise students think through are:
1. Which specific topics/subjects do you feel the most comfortable with and which do you feel the most uncertain about?
2. For any uncertain subjects/topics, make a list of specific things that are the most confusing and difficult to understand and provide that to any teacher/tutor.
3. What are some ways you like to learn? (Ex: by reading textbooks, listening to lectures & taking notes, visually by drawings, etc.)
