About James

First and foremost I am a Christian and follower of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. I will not deviate from my coaching style as I often incorporate scriptures to not only teach the game but edify the athlete.

At 32 years old I have an extensive background in basketball as well as a network of high level players, coaches, and close friends at various levels of completion from collegiate to professional. I am entering my second season as an assistant coach for Hs Varsity Girls , my first at Clinton Christian Academy. I spent my first season with an amazing group of athletes in Arizona at Santan Foothills HS under HC Enjoli Bland.

I started teaching the game and taking an interest in coaching early on when i realized there are more ways to stay connected to the game after undergoing micro fracture surgery following an arthroscopic surgery my first two years in high school.

With a 27 year growing foundation and understanding of the game I am poised to pass along skills, knowledge, and nuance to each of my students.

I spent the 2019 season as an asisstant girls high school basketball coach at Santan Foothills HS in Santan Valley. I am currently entering my second season as an assistant head coach and Head Coach for Jv Girls at Clinton Christian Academy.

About the lesson

First I like to understand a students reason for playing. A large part of the game is mental and if your mindset if off even the slightest your success may be as well. Second I like to evaluate their physical strength, speed, and coordination. And third l like to see what kind of natural ability each student is blessed with. Once those three areas are addressed I create unique drills, excercises and workouts to cater to each students strengths, weaknesses, and desires as an athlete!

I have worked with athletes from the ages of 5-25. Being versatile and able to adapt quickly allows me to work with various athletes. Younger athletes workouts often include a variety of drills to improve fundamentals and develop foundational skills. The workouts and degree of difficulty of required skills intensifies as the age begins to climb. Often times were exploring the creative side of ball handling passing, understanding how to create angles, space, mismatches etc. high level athletes workouts will be extremely concentrated more so like a fitness plan. Today is rim finishes, dribble drives. The idea is to hone in on a specific skill and and fine tune it through an array of difficult and challenging game like situations. I like to teach to the mind, the floor general, the facilitator, and teach my students how to play as opposed to how to “run a play”

Be prepared to be tested mentally and taught fundamentals first. Skills fade and become obsolete as the game progresses but your fundamentals will always be the foundations for which you build your game.
