About Richard

Originally, the goal of Learning from Nature was to re-connect students with the outside world so that they experience the infinite potential for learning from the natural world.

Once the pandemic began, however, we realized that students were falling behind in their schoolwork. So the outdoor education focus gave way to tutoring. I am a recently retired high school science teacher, with coursework in honors biology, geosystems, AP environmental science and oceanography. I previously worked in the environmental consulting industry.

I have now tutored at the college, high school, middle school and elementary school levels. I would like to continue to encourage and assist students in attaining their goals.

Covid-19 has grounded our business for now. What do I enjoy? First and foremost, interaction with the students. If I can make it a fun learning experience then it's a good day for tutor and student.

I contributed to an after-school science program when my kids were in elementary school.

I'm a recently retired high school science teacher (Fairfax County Public Schools). I was in the environmental consulting industry for nearly 20 years, then spent 20 years in education.

About the lesson

I don't start "tutoring" a student until I know a little bit about him or her. How are they doing in other subjects? Do they even like school? Then we can talk a little bit about what the student wants to achieve. It's not always about getting an A.

I have worked with students from elementary, middle school, high school and college.

Find someone who you're comfortable with. Provide that input to your parents BEFORE they hire someone - get involved in the process.

I'm particularly fond of helping a college student who was required to take a few science courses to graduate. She is a really hard worker who has overcome considerable challenges. She got A's in both classes. This experience really wasn't about the money; I'm very happy for her.
