About Ritika

As an undergrad, I used to love getting involved in anything that allowed me to help my peers. Apart from tutoring, I have also actively participated in my college's orientation programs and as a social media intern for the international relations office. I know techniques which help me connect on a personal level which ultimately help the student get interested in the subject.

I have had professional training in tutoring specifically focusing on student groups and peer mentoring. As a recent graduate I not only have the material fresh in my mind (as I have taken the courses myself in the last 3-4 years) but I also understand what is hindering a student's progress from their point of view and can give better solutions overall.

About the lesson

My first step is to analyze the level at which the student is. I also like to know any other factors that are affecting the student's growth in their academics if they are comfortable in talking about it. Both these things help me gauge what kind of techniques I can use to help the student with also what kind of things they can do to improve in the subject. In general, my first goal is to make the student interested in the subject and understand its importance.

I have worked mainly with college students who come from a plethora of different backgrounds. Particularly, due to my interest in the global relations aspect of academia, I have also tutored many students who come from global backgrounds and who have little knowledge of the the language (English) and the academic culture of the US.

I believe that as a student, my teacher should be able to incite a genuine interest in the subject. While my major might be specializing in Neuroscience, over the course of my undergrad, I have had amazing tutors and professors of various disciplines who have been able to get me excited for their own subject. Foundational work is also really important which is why I want to focus on general chemistry and biology.

One of the most recent events was just a simple advicing call for graduate school with one of my friends/tutees.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
While it depends from a case to case basis, students first need to understand what they are lacking in, or what they are weak in in the subject. Are they having trouble understanding the subject as a whole? This means they need the tutor to help them with their foundational work. If they have had problems with specific topics, then they need to focus on that. Of course, this analysis should not stress a student out and they should feel comfortable to approach the tutor without any specific questions and just ask for help. In that case, it is the tutor's job to figure out what they might be struggling with.
