About Kelsey

Hello! My name is Kelsey and I have been in the educational field since 2017. I began as a science instructor at a small nonprofit, actively working with school-children to teach them about marine life and ecology. I was trained to engage children in interactive teaching, or in methods where the kids are actively involved in their learning process. The things we become most knowledgeable about come from experience and it is really important to me to teach kids in languages that resonate with their personal learning styles.

I have had experience with children from pre-school age all the way to adults in college, mainly in subjects dealing with biology, ecology, and life sciences. I hold a degree in Marine Science with a minor in Chemistry from the University of Hawaii, Hilo. I have hands-on experience in geological sciences and can provide services for most science-related subjects.

Had gotten a degree in Marine Science with an eventual goal of becoming a professor. So work I do helps me prepare for my ultimate career goal.

I have a Bachelors of Science in Marine Science with a Minor in Chemistry. I have 3+ years of teaching experience in the non-profit sector; primarily teaching about ecology/biology of ocean life. I have also taken a series of courses that specifically address teaching techniques and the tailoring of information to individual students.

The first and most important thing is to get to know them. Each person has their own way of learning that allows them to maximize the amount of information they take in. Taking a moment to sit with a student and really understand the "language" that most resonates with them and how they like to learn. I would basically start off with "get to know you" questions :)

All types! I have taught special education, pre-k grade levels all the way until college. I have taught groups of senior citizens, community groups, school groups, and more. There really isn't a type of student that I haven't had experience with.

Look for someone who cares and who is willing to put in an effort to your learning. It is really easy to just toss a power point your way and say "take notes", but that isn't putting effort into a student's learning. Find a tutor/teacher who does what they can to understand how you learn best, who makes learning fun for you. When its made to be fun, difficulties and frustrations are seen rather as challenges to overcome and accomplish. Learning becomes easy if it is taught in a way your brain responds most positively to.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
How do you learn best? Really think back to how you've learned the things you are really knowledgeable about. Was it hands-on? Did you have to do something a couple times to really 'get it'? Was it just notes and you were able to memorize them? What methods in the classroom help you to best absorb the information being taught?

Another line of questioning to think about is what are your goals? What do you ultimately want out of recieving tutoring aid? Is it to just pass a class or is it to really have a grasp on the topic at hand? Being aware of your goals helps refine the learning process even further!
