About Kelsey

Clarinetist Kelsey Castellanos recently finished a Professional Performer’s Certificate at the Lynn University Conservatory of Music in Boca Raton, Florida. She also has a Masters in Clarinet Performance and Literature from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York and a Bachelors in Clarinet Performance from DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois. She is originally from Port Orange, Florida, where she began playing the clarinet at the age of 11. Her primary teachers have included Jon Manasse, Stephen Williamson, Julie DeRoche and Phil Paglialonga. She has also worked with retired Chicago Symphony principal clarinetist, Larry Combs. She is active as a soloist, chamber, and ensemble musician, and has performed throughout North America and in Ireland. She has also performed as a guest with The United States Air Force Band when they were on tour in Rochester, New York. Emerging as one of today's newest clarinet educators, Kelsey has been teaching private clarinet lessons since 2020. When not performing or teaching, Kelsey enjoys playing tennis, going to spin class, and cooking.

I started teaching my first clarinet lessons as a requirement of my Woodwind Pedagogy class back in college. I wasn't sure that I would be any good at it but just seeing my students improve was such an exciting feeling, like wow, this really worked for them, and I can see the results and that's because of me! Ever since then teaching was something that I wanted to do whenever I had the time through my performance studies.

I recently just graduated with a Professional Performer's Certificate at the Lynn Conservatory of Music in Boca Raton, Florida. I also have a Masters in Clarinet Performance and Literature from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York and a Bachelors in Clarinet Performance from DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois. I studied with Jon Manasse, internationally recognized soloist and chamber musician and principal clarinetist of the American Ballet Theater Orchestra and The Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra, through my years at the Lynn Conservatory of Music and at the Eastman School of Music. While at DePaul University, I also studied with Stephen Williamson, principal clarinetist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and well-recognized pedagogue Julie DeRoche. I have also worked with retired principal of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Larry Combs.

About the lesson

Let's find out what works the best for you as the student. Let's discuss your goals; is this an activity that you would like to spend a lot of time working at or is it more of something that you would like to do as time permits on your end more as a hobby? Depending on the student, I am confident that we can develop the perfect routine in order for that student to reach their musical goals.

I have worked with all students ranging from middle school beginners, advanced high school students, and adults who just picked up the clarinet for fun as it was an instrument that they have always wanted to learn.

As long as playing the clarinet is something that you want to do, no matter how often or how serious, we can figure out something that works for you, and we can have fun doing it!

My first real experience teaching clarinet as a requirement of my Woodwind Pedagogy class in college. At first I viewed the requirement as a drag, not believing that I would like it and that it was a complete waste of time, but once I finally started teaching, I didn't realize that I could have so much to say or that I could even have so much fun working with a student! Seeing them improve after trying a suggestion of mine was a really rewarding feeling.
