About Mary
My name is Mary Schieferstein and I am a web developer, web designer, and graphic designer from Cleveland, OH. Many have told me I am good at teaching, that I can explain difficult concepts and help people see things in a new way. Due, in part, to their encouragement, I ended up in graduate school, where I am continuing to improve my teaching skills. Helping others learn brings me great joy, and I hope that learning brings joy to those I tutor as well!
I have 6 years of experience in my field and have worked extensively with HTML, CSS, jQuery, and PHP. I graduated with a degree encompassing computer science, graphic design, and communication, so I am familiar with everything from the Adobe suite to programming logic. Since I'm in seminary, I can help with the Bible as well.
My portfolio is available online at (concealed information)
I enjoy helping others learn, enabling them to meet their goals and marking their progress. For me, the best part of teaching is building relationships with students and seeing their growth. Knowledge impacts people for a lifetime, and I consider it a great privilege to give that gift to my students.
I've always enjoyed teaching. I helped my younger siblings with their schoolwork, helped my classmates when they were struggling with concepts, taught Sunday School for a number of years, trained new employees, and now am learning how to teach adults the Bible! The best part of teaching for me is building relationships with students and seeing their growth and progress as they learn.
I have a BA in Digital Media and Design, a degree which encompasses computer science, graphic design, and communication. Since graduating, I have spent the last 6 years working as a web designer, web developer, and graphic designer. As such, I have a lot of experience and am quite good at what I do. I've worked with everything from maintaining SQL databases and C# web applications to custom-coding WordPress themes and web pages.

I typically start by getting a sense of the student's needs, particularly in terms of class/learning requirements versus current progress. We set up a date and time to meet and jump in! From there, things are pretty tailored to an individual student's needs, whether that involves setting goals, explaining concepts, or just being a helping hand and a sounding board as they take the lead on working through the material.
I've worked with a wide variety of ages, but mostly elementary and young adult.
I would say make sure you find someone who is both skilled at what they do and good at explaining it, starting with the basics. Some people are coding ninjas but don't know how to explain what they're doing in common vernacular. And of course there are many wonderful teachers with areas of expertise other than coding! So make sure you find someone who knows what they're doing and can explain it in a way you can understand.
One of my favorite teaching experiences was during the Bible study I led this summer. Our very first lesson, I explained a concept, and a few of the people in the group told me they would never read the Bible the same way again! It was incredible to see them learning and growing and to know the impact that would have on their lives.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
It's always helpful to figure out what you need. Do you need a tutor for a class? If so, make sure you find someone who can teach you what the class requires. Are you just wanting to learn more on your own? Then make a list of your learning goals and find someone who can help you reach them.
