About Christy

First and foremost, I am a writer and filmmaker. This work is my utmost passion and I pursued it in college to make sure this dream became a reality! I'm young and excited, but I've already logged about 10 years working in my field as a cinematographer. I care about this field, this work, and anyone who seeks help or advice. I'm able to explain concepts simply and thoroughly and guide new writers/new filmmakers along their journeys.

Best part about tutoring: showing people how accessible filmmaking is. Like any other skill, it can be learned and it can be monetized. No matter who you are. Film and videomaking does not only exist in the exclusive Hollywood bubble we've been made to believe in. It's for all of us!

Tutoring, by definition, is a student's acceptance of room for improvement in the area of their choice. What I'm particularly good at is revealing where a student's strengths lie. My work as a tutor will always be encouraging and exciting, because writers and filmmakers are innately thrilling! I love working with people who are just starting out, but I'm also competent enough to work with seasoned creators as an editor, a bounceboard, or a first reader. My personal favorite work is explaining the camera and cinematographic techniques, since my professional life has been mostly devoted to camera. Nothing is more fun.

I started just after college, when classmates asked me to return to campus and visit their clubs and classes to explain camera concepts. I began assisting writers with editing, format, and grammar soon after.

I have a Bachelor's degree from Old Dominion University (Norfolk, VA) in Communication, with a concentration in Cinema Production. Most of that coursework was split into two categories: creative writing and filmmaking. I have deep respect for good writing of all kinds and feel confident in my ability to explain these techniques to students. Professionally, I'm a writer and cinematographer + photographer, and have worked on lots of music videos, short films, and corporate projects. I've created video and photo work for companies like Lionsgate, Dell Technologies, and Victron Energy. I'm a huge movie lover and an avid reader!

Let's have a casual meeting in which we chat about your goals. What do you already know, and what do you think might be holding you back from achieving more of a mastery in your topic? Together we'll come up with a mini-curriculum and then tackle it at your desired pace.

I've worked with lots of writers and screenwriters looking to crack open their essays and scripts. The majority of my life has been devoted to camerawork and filmmaking, so I've also taught several camera-focused crash courses to students (high school and college) and college film clubs.

Come with lots of questions! For students interested in film and camera, start to consider your favorite movies and photographers so we can start understanding your personal taste. For students looking to improve their writing, we'll kick off our work by reading some examples of excellent short essays. Good writers are excited readers.
