About Rebecca

LIAFA is Long Island’s premier art school, with art classes for kids (Pre-K through 7th grade), teens (portfolio preparation), and adults of all levels and abilities. We offer training in the methods and techniques of classical representational art, as well as many other topics. Our primary goals are to train the student’s eye to see accurately and with sensitivity, and to foster an environment in which students can grow in their understanding of art as well as in skill and confidence. Classes run year-round, seven days a week. Please visit us to see our studios, or call to arrange a trial class.

We love to provide the tools needed for students to have those delightful "A-ha!" moments, when their ideas finally can come to life on paper, canvas, or iPad. We grow with the students' needs; as we have seen an increase in a need/desire to design digitally, for example, we started to offer digital art courses. The medium may change and expand, but the fundamental principles of design will always be the same!

All of our instructors have a different story, but we all have a love of the knowledge we ourselves gained in our study of art, and wish to pass it along to others. Learning a practical system for how to approach drawing and painting can make the difference between a frustrated hobbyist and a rising professional!

All of our instructors have MFA or equivalant level of professional training. Our instructors also maintain their own studio practice, exhibiting and teaching workshops worldwide.

About the lesson

All of our instruction is individualized, even in our group classes. We find out what the student is interested in learning and previous experience, and based off that information we pair that student with the best class or private teacher for his/her needs.

We work with beginners of all ages and abilities, professionals who have their own career but want to be part of a community, and everything in-between. We work with students who need to build a strong portfolio for college or graduate applications. We also offer kids classes starting in PreK.

Because our instruction is critique-based instead of lecture-based (in other words, the instructor spends one-on-one time with every student), the student's individual needs can be met effectively.

Do a trial class if you can. It's important that you enjoy the personality of your teacher and find an environment in which you are challenged with nurture and encouragement. Every student may define that differently, so if you can experience a class before financially committing, you'll feel more confident in your choice.

Also, art is hard work! Don't expect for everything to fall into place with ease all the time. Be measured in your expectations. If you have never picked up a paint brush before, you won't be Michelangelo at the first try! Be patient with the process. Sometimes it takes time for things to "click."

At the time of updating this profile, we are in the spring season and getting news from our teens and graduate-school-bound adults about their school acceptances and scholarships. This year we are sending teens to Rhode Island School of Design, Ringling College of Art and Design, Hartford Art College, Johns Hopkins medical illustration program, and more! This year's top scholarship received so far for art portfolio is $23,000 per year! It is so gratifying to see our younger students excell and pursue their dreams!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out

Or perhaps you have some new-found time in your retirement, and you're finally taking an art classes to try something new, and time isn't an issue? Either way, it'll help a teacher craft a program for you.

What kind of art are you attracted to? For example, if you love abstract art and only want to paint like an abstract painter, this may affect your choice of teacher.

Group classes break down to about $45 per 3-hour class (this is our pay-per-class rate). View our current season of classes by visiting our website. The prices you see will be the total for that season. For example, a season that spans 11 classes will cost $490. You may also purchase a package of classes instead of enrolling in a specific season.
