About Debi
I've been an art educator for the past 30 years where I spent 25 years in the k-12 classroom in Gwinnett County GA!
I was honored to be named the Gwinnett County Teacher of the Year in 2005 and was a Georgia Teacher of Year finalist in 2006.
I was the Georgia Art Educator of the year 2008, the Georgia Secondary Art Educator 2017, and the Georgia Elementary Art Educator 1999. I was named the National Elementary Art Educator in 2006! I humbly accept all of these accolades on behalf of the thousands of students I have been honored to teach and guide. I have been an art advocate and leader through the GAEA, the SCAEA and the NAEA and am passionate about art and art education!
I retired and now live in Hilton Head where I'm working with the Art League and the Art Center but also doing private classes out of my studio!
I'm also working with the Art of Education University teaching graduate school online. I've been an educational consultant as well so check me out at WESTpectations.com
I'm looking forward to working with kids and adults in the low country (and beyond via Zoom!)
I am passionate about teaching our future how to document their "now" through their own visual stories. Art is an expression of one's self and every mark made is a part of "art history"!

I supply a detailed handout with art historical resources, materials, procedures and assessment opportunities.
I model a variety of media techniques and encourage exploration and then we dive into a prompt or lesson idea!
i also encourage my students to practice in a visual journal. When I was in the classroom I would exhibit the work and also have my students consider service learning activities so they would realize how their art could help change the world for the better!
