About Marie Claire
I have been teaching priavte and group art lessons for the past four years. I am a graduate of the Maryland Institute College of Art. I graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor's of Fine Arts. Along with working in all materials, including puppetry, I taught throughout my university career and have seven years total of art teaching experience.
I really love art and teaching, and I enjoy teaching all ages of students; I have worked with students ranging from ages 5 to 75, and have taught private lessons, group lessons in homes and schools, summer camps, and pre-college programs. My main priority is making sure my students are enjoying and learning new skills, whether that means singing a song while painting with younger students, or challenging older students to make a portrait with no people in it.
I really love seeing students learning how to express themselves through their art, and connecting more to the world around can them. I call it art-power!
I also enjoy helping students through the challenges in their lessons, and seeing their confidence grow as they overcome things they thought they couldn't do before. It's so rewarding.
I attended art camp every summer beginning at the age of six, and when I reached counselor-age, I was asked to help facilitate the classes. It was an aha moment! I realized that I loved teaching art. I went on to lead a local school art club, and many more art teaching positions, and this love of teaching was continually reinforced.
I graduated summa cum laude from the Maryland Institute College of Art with my Bachelor's of Fine Arts in May, 2017. I have been painting, drawing, and working in many materials since the age of 5, and I have seven years of art teaching experience, especially with kids and teens.

I first meet with students (and their parents if they are a minor) to talk about what they'd like to get out of their lessons.
Then, we start with different exercises depending on the level of student to see how they approach the material, and become comfortable working with it. Each student gets a different curriculum depending on what they are looking for out of the classes and how they work; that's how I make sure to keep it simultaneously enjoyable and educational.
I have worked with students ranging from Age 4 to 75, beginners to experienced artists, students with different abilities, and students from many cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
I have worked in Baltimore public schools, summer camps, private institutions, pre college programs for advanced high school students, and private lessons.
Make sure the teacher knows what your goals are in your lessons, and make sure that the teacher has a structure in place but is flexible enough to give you the personalized education you need. Also look for a teacher who can lead you through the technical and conceptual aspects of art, not just one.
I was teaching a young child to sew, and after many tries and much encouragement, he was able to sew a button on. His smile was so rewarding, and we celebrated with a 1-song dance party!
