About Deborah

Creativity is life!

Students in my classes discover their own creativity and develop their artistic skills in a variety of media, including drawing, painting, weaving, clay, jewelry, and many other fun and challenging media.

I love helping kids connect with the world around them by incorporating literacy, history, science, and culture into many of my lessons. But mostly, they enjoy the process of using art media to express themselves!

Due to the fact that I teach full time in a public school, my hours with this website will be afternoons/evenings, and sometimes on weekends during the school year, but my schedule will be far more flexible during summer!

About me: I am an elementary art teacher of over 25 years experience. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Fine art from Metropolitan State College of Denver and a Masters in Education from the University of Colorado-Boulder. I was named the Colorado Elementary Art Educator of the Year in 2005, the Pacific Region Elementary Art Educator of the Year in 2006, the Colorado Supervisory Art Educator of the Year in 2010, and the Pacific Region Supervisory Art Educator of the Year in 2011, for my service as the art coordinator in Adams 12. I was honored to design and paint the background scene on the walls of the tidepool exhibit at the Butterfly Pavilion in 2000. I live with my husband, our dog, three cats and three ferrets!

I always knew, even from childhood, that I wanted to be a teacher. And I've always been an artist. Becoming an art teacher was, for me, the most natural choice in the world! I was fortunate to secure a full-time teaching job in an elementary school almost right after graduating, and have been teaching art in school, community centers, The Butterfly Pavilion, and private homes, ever since!

I have been an artist all my life. I went to college specifically to become an art teacher, and earned my BFA from Metro and my M.Ed. from CU Boulder. As a practicing professional artist, I continue to learn new techniques, art media, and processes, not only for my students, or for selling my art, but also for the pure enjoyment of making art.

About the lesson

When a new student transfers into my classroom at school, I like to make a connection with him/her right away. I ask where they came from, what their art experience was at their previous school, and what their favorite subjects and things to do after school are.

If we are in the middle of a project, I ask the student if they want to start what the rest of the class is doing, or if they prefer to make their own drawing. The answer varies from child to child, but both help me to learn more about the child's background in art.

Working in public school has blessed me with the joy of teaching children from all backgrounds! I love working with the neighborhood kids, English Language Learners, students from many countries and cultures, children with various abilities/disabilities, medical conditions, children who live in single parent homes, or blended families, children who suffered from trauma, children who have natural artistic ability as well as those who think they don't.

Although my career as a teacher has been K-5, I am qualified and skilled to teach any age, preschool through adult! I have developed the ability to break down lessons into increments or sections that make the learning easier, thereby helping the student reach success. Some of my work with older students and adults has included batik, clay projects, beaded jewelry, and even paint nite parties!

I absolutely LIVE for student success! Just recently, at our district art show, one of my 4th graders was honored with the Board of Education's Art Purchase Award! At the same time, our Credit Union honored two of my fifth graders with awards--one with an honorable mention, and one with Second Place! AND, 195 of my students (I teach nearly 600, K-5, at my school), were accepted to have their art published in a book of children's art, pending parent approval!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I would want to know what the student hopes to learn or gain from instruction. Is the purpose to improve skills in school? Are there certain criteria the student needs to meet in school that I can help with? Is the student homeschooled? Does the student have access to the materials required for the lesson? Is the student willing to trust and respect me as his/her teacher, and trust that I serve to help them succeed?

Details

My pricing system depends on the length of time the lesson takes, if there are multiple sessions, difficulty or challenge, and distance from my home, if I'm driving to a location, and whether the student provides the art materials or I do.

I will consider discounts/sliding scale when teaching groups of 3-10 students in one session!
