About Jen

At Rose Cottage we work with groups and individuals to connect with their creative spirit.

Our interests are in promoting art and music in the Wythe County Community, as well as the surrounding counties, by offering fine art and music lessons, camps, pottery classes and paint nights, as well as hosting a variety of visiting artisans for workshops teaching jewelry making fiber art and much, much, more.

I love that moment when someone realizes that they have just created a thing of beauty for themselves, and little do they know, the world! It is so wonderful to be a part of that process of self discovery!

I started teaching after I started working toward my graduate degree in education from Old Dominion University. Once I acquired teaching skills for teaching general education, Arts Integration and STEAM (Science, Engineering, Art, and Math) I felt more confident in providing lessons in Art. I started working with Children in 2014 and have moved on since then to work with people of all ages.

I started drawing as a child and was blessed to receive painting lessons in acrylics and oils from professional instructors, as a young person. I also have a degree in Architecture from Virginia Tech. I practiced for many years. Learning about design and working in the field of architecture for 15 years afforded me opportunities in management, sharing information, and working with a variety of different projects, and professionals in multiple types of settings. In 2000 I began showing my own paintings and drawings in restaurants and galleries in Virginia, Alaska, and many other places throughout the United States. I opened my own professional studio, MOONbow Artworks, in 2003, and have been had many of my paintings published in noteable calendars and books all over the world(We Moon, Rev de Femmes). I went back to school to become an educator in 2012 and have been certified as an Arts Integration Specialist and endorsed in Technology Education. I currently teach STEAM classes in Engineering and design for middle school students in the public school system, where I live. In 2014 I began teaching art lessons to children and adults and  opened my art school, Rose Cottage School of Art, in 2016. Since that time we have added pottery and music studios, and contracted several regional artists that work with clay, painting and drawing, fiber, jewelry, and mixed media to name a few of the different forms of media that our small school covers.

We typically start with the basics with our weekly lessons and then build on the student's skill set, whether it is drawing, painting, pottery, or music lessons.

For single events like paint parties, we generally get a feel for the how much experience a student has and then hone in on what they need to feel successful in each experience. We also use these single events to teach basic skills, as we create works of art.

I have worked with children ages 4 to 18, as well as adults age 19 to 100. I have worked with large and small groups of people.

Take deep breathes, let go of any expectations of the outcome, and monitor your progress. When you see how far you have come, it will give you a real sense of accomplishment. Allow the time you use to create art to be a relaxing time of reflection and learning about the media and yourself.

I occasionally work with students in a pet portrait class. I love this event for a few different reasons. One is that I often get students who have recently lost a pet and this process of painting their pet seems to help them with healing that sense of loss. I also enjoy this event, because as the student is painting their "best friend" or "fur baby" they discuss with the whole group (no more than 10 people, per class) what they love about their pet. This spirals into everyone eventually sharing. This event is very challenging and my goal is typically, not to create the worlds best piece of art, it is to help the person to capture the essence of their pet. When the character and expression come shining through the paint and canvas, you can see the look of love, pride, and accomplishment that eminates from the person creating the painting. I love that part the most!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
They need to ask themselves what they want to accomplish with the particular classes they want to take?

Is this something that they want to just try once or twice or are they committed to really learning the process?

Does the instructor provide a safe and supportive learning environment?

Are there any specific needs that they may have with regard to their own physiology or mental emotional states?

Does the instructor have a good sense of understanding of how a particular form of media works?
