About Arthur

I am a life-long music student and teacher, who has a passion to pass on. My goal is to meet needs and inspire the innate and personal music in all of my students. As a music student of mine, the student will get the benefits of 30+ years in music education and performance.

I love what I do because of what others did for me, which was to inspire me to love life through music.

I'd have to say that my first formal teaching experience was during my college career's final semester, where I student taught at two schools consecutively. My first professional teaching experience began in Philadelphia area parochial and private schools, where I taught all wind and percussion (aka band) and several beginner and intermediate band ensembles at some of those schools.

My training and experience as a musician goes back to my middle school years as a percussion student. Later in high school, I became interested in the bass guitar. While in college, I got involved in the marching arts as a member of the brass ensemble in an area drum and bugle corps.

My music education experience began in the 1980's when I attended West Chester University as a music education major, and graduated in 1984. However, during my various opportunities to teach music other the past 30+ years, I continued to learn from others (especially the hundreds of students I had been honored to be involved with).

About the lesson

Usually my first lesson is free and it is spend talking with the new student. I use this time to evaluate and educate myself on who the student is, what is their interests and background, and how I can help meet their needs as a student. Then I formulate an educational curriculum to begin with the best materials based on their age and prior musical background. One plan absolutely does not fit all students.

I have worked with students from nearly every background imaginable. This includes students with special needs, students in both privileged and non-privileged economic backgrounds, and all grade levels from K-12.

First, make sure the teacher is credentials, and has a thorough performance background. Next, after meeting the teacher, the student (or parent of the student) should decide if the teacher is the "right fit" for them or their child based on how he teacher presents themselves upon the first meeting. Lastly, I believe it is important to make sure that the teacher is organized and has a stated goal for the student that they can put into words.

Last fall, I directed a recital of current percussion students that I teach at a local music student. When it was over, I was thrilled to see all my students with their families gather outside. The jubilant of seeing my students so exited by the experience and their parents faces (well masked faces) so happy and proud. That's the icing on the cake!!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
1. How far can that teacher get the student on that particular instrument. For example, if the teacher has the means and ability to get the student past the beginning stage before passing them on to a more experienced teacher.

2. What is the teacher's policy regarding missed lessons, if they are late, and what can be done to offer a make-up lesson if the student needs to cancel a lesson with sufficient notice.

3. What materials and equipment will need to be purchased including a devices needed to have a remote (virtual) music lesson.

4. What is a good space for personal practicing, as well as the actual lesson in their home.

5. If the student is very young (6 to 7 yrs. old), does there need to be an adult present in the lesson?

6. Can the teacher provide advice on the purchase of an appropriate instrument (i.e. should a full drum kit be purchased right away, or will a pair of sticks and a practice pad be more appropriate).

My pricing standard is based on a flat rate per 30 minutes of instruction time. I never charge students addition rates for time spent outside of the lesson to enhance the lessons including preparation or fact finding.
