About Ben

I have been teaching private lessons even as early as a high school student. I have loved teaching music at every step of my career, and have led larger ensembles as a music director.

I am classically trained at the premiere conservatory for well rounded top-tier percussionists, the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University.

As a professional musician, I have toured through 30 cities across the United States and Japan.

About the lesson

We create a video practice diary so that friends and family can watch the student grow. You'd be surprised how quckly you can sound good in my studio! See my photos here for example screenshots, or watch them at siphon-music.com !

We can cover the whole gamut of percussion instruments, or tailor the curriculum to your own personal interests. The vibe of the lessons is always to have fun while holding ourselves to high standards of musiciancship.

I have worked extensively with high school, college, and independent world-class musicians. I have taught the whole range of experience levels, from beginners to competitors in top level competitions.

Not "any teacher" will do. High-achieving student musicians have one thing overwhelmingly in common: they have teachers with exemplary careers of their own. I teach music for the love of teaching, but I am dedicated to being a top-tier performer in my own right as well.

Secondly, it is always important to HAVE FUN. And having fun is goes hand-in-hand with pushing yourself to the next level. We are fortunate as drummers/percussionists to have chosen, hands down, the most satisfying instrument to play. And there's nothing more satisfying than noticing one day "wow... I have gotten so much better!"

I loved improvising a piece of music at a corporate event, where I used a technique called "live looping" to create an entire drum symphony out of just a microphone and a flood gate used by the MTA. Students who are interested in composition can work on their original music with me as well!
