About Patrick

I’ve been drumming for 25+ years in multiple bands, with over 10 recordings covering Rock, Soul, Rap, Funk, Metal, Jazz & Latin styles

I’m on staff as drum-instructor and electronics specialist at the Philadelphia School Of Rock.

I have been a certified teacher since 2011, as adjunct at Art Institute and Drexel University, with a B.A. Psychology; training in ergonomics, injury prevention, and motivational psychology. Experienced with special- needs youth and limited-mobility clients.

I've taught lessons on-and-off for years.

I first started in 2003, during a summer home from college, teaching for a few weeks at a local store in Tulsa OK.

After moving to Philadelhpia, I taught sporadic one-off sessions for people interested in specific drumkit or audio-electronics stuff.

In 2016, I started regular lessons from home, starting with my then-guitarist's son.

By 2017, I was soon picking up subsitute shifts at Philadelphia's (original) School of Rock, where I am now on regular staff.

About the lesson

I always start with an evaluation session, where we:

- discuss their musical background and goals.

- assess aural skills ("ear") for rhythm and structure

- assess musical literacy (for drum notation)

- discusss physicality and motivation; how much time and energy they have as a "casual hobbiest" or a "daily driven" learner.

With this information, I tailor the start, pacing, and focus of the lesson schedule to fit the student. We can anways adjust along the way to the client's satisfaction.

Ages: 6 to 50+

Being so close to "University City" campuses, I've had college and grad students, and local academic-types.

Most things are challenging because they're either "hard" (like archery) or "complicated" (like chess), but seldom both.

Drumming can be a a bit of both.

The challenge of learning can be both physically AND mentally taxing, but the reward is that progress is doubly satisfying.

SO, MY ADVICE:
Personal chemistry with a teacher is vital. If you don't feel comfortable straining your body or brain with (or for) your teacher, it can really lesson motivation.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Like any instrument, it REALLY helps to have a kit to pratice on and call your own.

Drums arme a uniquely large and loud investment, but regardless of what the sales clerk at the drum store tells you, you DO NOT need a full kit right away.
Fundamnetals will start on 1 of few drums, so you can literally build up a kit in steps.
