About Julia
While I have sought a career in media & communications, my passion for education has persisted, specifically my desire to see an education system more flexible to the needs of the individual student. I believe these firmly held ideals concerning the education of the future will manifest in my personal approach to any role I fulfill as an educator.
The work I aim to do as a tutor will be (presuming my efforts to create an educational YouTube channel on film history doesn't count) the first outlet for my drive to educate I've had in a long time, and I am excited to see the people I will help with that drive.
Currently, I'm looking for income to supplement my work as a freelance writer and videographer. Given my skillset, someone recommended to me that I might be qualified to seek out work as a tutor, and so here I am.
I will be very honest: I am somewhat new to tutoring, but I very much look forward to building up a good reputation through gaining opportunities to work with students in need. I have a very humanities-focused educational background (specifically, BA in Film) and my grasp on English Literature, critical analysis, and writing is very firm; I have received excellent marks in all English & Writing courses throughout high school and college and could produce references for this upon request. Presently, I have begun to write professionally, so I have a reference point for those who aim to refine their writing skills to the professional level.

Education is not "one size fits all." How someone learns is something which should be approached on a case-by-case basis. Realizing that the current system is failing to meet students' educational needs and that a more personalized approach should be adopted is what drives my passion for education. When I meet a new student, I aim to understand how they learn and meet them where they are, talking with them on a person-to-person level to establish a relationship of human trust, and then guiding them through the process of refining their reading and writing skills.
While this is a beginnning, I am not without tutoring experience entirely; there were a few instances in college where I've looked over essays students wrote and helped them make corrections.
It's important to remember that language is a human construct, and it's equally important to have a teacher who recognizes this. English isn't just a collection of grammatical rules set in stone by a council; it is a living, breathing tool. You are just as much a participant in the process of creating language as those who developed it. The importance of writing well is that it allows you to gain mastery over this tool and communicate with others more effectively.
I'm privileged to live in a part of town that is close to everything. Even now, a few months after moving in, there are still nearby areas I haven't explored. A few days ago, I decided to wander in a random direction and stumbled across a park. I'd always known this park was there, but I'd never had the initiative to go check it out until then. It was beautiful, specifically on account of the wide grassy open spaces and the massive trees which stretched up with their bare branches to the sky. I had no idea a place so perfect was this close. I hope to revisit this spot many times in the months to come.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Despite how much we like to compartmentalize time, the work done between a student and a teacher is not the beginning or end of either of their stories. Real learning cannot happen if it is separated from life; rather, it only happens when it is accepted as a part of life. Your teacher isn't just there to mechanically put knowledge inside of your head. The purpose of a teacher is the purpose of any guide: to take you from where you are to where you need to be. The guidance a teacher gives can only be properly given and received if both the teacher and the student recognize it as a chapter in the larger journey of life.
