About Madison

Hi! My name is Madison and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to help students achieve their greatest potential in their learning and to assist them in receiving the best education possible

I am currently doing my undergrad at UT Austin as an English/Linguistics major and will also be starting the Liberal Arts teaching program soon. In the past, I have worked as a substitute teacher for grades K-12 and aspire to be a teacher when I graduate! It's very important to me to foster a learning environment that is most helpful for the individual student and focus on their needs, as I have done with students in the past and plan to do with my students in the future.

I have extensive experience with AP subjects of a wide variety, but particularly English, and was named an AP Scholar with Distinction. I also have deep knowledge of studying techniques, particularly for major tests such as the ACT and SAT, and was named a National Merit Commended Student. In addition, I am studying both language and literature, which provide a great intersection with general humanities (such as social studies and history) as well as a comprehensive knowledge of English courses.

For younger students, I have a strong knowledge of the full range of basic subject matter, and am currently working on both the psychology of learning (including the most effective techniques for teaching, studying, and encouraging students) and language acquisition, or the learning of language among children, which both provide important insights into the learning process. My experience with linguistics is also ideal for younger students learning introductory concepts in English/language arts, such as phonics and spelling.

As I mentioned before, I have a passion for teaching; it was some of my best teachers who helped me get to where I am now, and when I become a teacher myself, I hope to give that back to my own students. But for now, on my path toward that career, I hope to be able to help your children get the best learning experience possible in these difficult times and prepare them for future success.

I love helping students! I think it's so important that all students get a chance to succeed and enjoy learning. I love to be able to make a difference for children and help them achieve the goals they struggle to meet on their own.

I have always been interested in teaching, since high school, but I first got started in actual teaching as a substitute teacher. Before then, I had dabbled in tutoring friends and classmates, and after graduating I had helped high school students primarily with debate programs and essay writing, but when I became a substitute teacher, I was able to apply that knowledge to an actual classroom setting. However, I think that even more influential than my teaching experience is my current education not only in topics that pertain to students' curriculum, but in the psychology and methods of teaching/learning itself.

My high school education included involvement and state medals in speech/debate events, extensive interaction with AP subjects, years of Spanish education, the study of theatre, the study of child development, and successful experience with SAT and ACT prep. I graduated in the top 10% of my class.

My current education is at the University of Texas at Austin, where I am studying English and Linguistics. I am about to begin the Liberal Arts teaching program, and am currently taking precursory courses for the program.

My experience in teaching, education, and extracurriculars is primarily from substitute teaching, freelance tutoring in the past, providing assistance for debate team members, specialized assistance in essay writing, briefly interning with the University Interscholastic League, and serving as a judge for multiple speech and debate tournaments.

About the lesson

My typical process for working with a new student involves isolating that student's particular needs. This entails a few key questions:

- What is the student struggling with?
- What is the student succeeding at?
- What are the student's general study habits?
- What is going on in the student's life that might be affecting their learning?
- What are the student's goals? Where would they like to see improvement, and how?

These are just a few of the ideas that are crucial to understanding the student's needs. I'll be the first to admit that I am not an expert on everything under the sun; but if a student has a pressing need that requires additional knowledge on my part, I go out of my way to attain that knowledge for myself and provide those resources which I know will help the student with this subject.

Every student works differently; once I know what the student's needs are, the process for addressing those needs can vary. Sometimes, it's as simple as having a study partner or developing effective study techniques of their own. Sometimes, it requires further explanation and practice on difficult topics. Sometimes, students are struggling not with the topics itself, but with some source of stress that is impeding their learning success. Any of these topics (and more) may or may not be addressed in helping your child improve their learning experience, based on what their individual needs are and what the parents' comfort level is with different techniques.

I have worked as a substitute teacher for children from all grades K-12. I work personally with my neices and nephews (who are all elementary school ages), and have worked for commission primarily with high school students on debate, English, and essays.

Though my specialty is in English, I also have extensive knowledge in social studies/history; working knowledge of Spanish; and basic knowledge of math and science. Depending on the particular subjects, I have worked with students on topics falling anywhere within that spectrum.

My advice to a student looking for an English teacher (or really any teacher, for that matter) would be to find the person that fits your needs. Every student is different, and not every approach will work for everyone. Every student has different needs, and no teacher is an expert at addressing all of them. It is incredibly important that if a student needs extra help, they find a teacher that is dedicated to helping them and does so in a way that truly helps them achieve success.

Recently, my little sisters (who are twins) graduated from high school! They are both attending community college now, and I have helped them throughout high school (and am currently helping them with college) not only in classes but in other issues, like testing, FAFSA and other school documents, and transitioning to college and thinking about what they want to do with their education. It made me incredibly proud to see their hard work pay off and watch them walk across the stage, especially in these new and unfamiliar circumstances. I have always been very invested in their success and to watch it happen before my eyes was such a joy!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
There are many, many important things that factor into what a students' needs are. Some questions students may need to ask themselves are:

- What am I struggling with? (Not just particular subjects, like science or English, but think about the specific issues you are having in those subjects: are you struggling to understand the periodic table of elements? Are you having a hard time writing essays? Identify your greatest needs, but also think about even the smallest issues you find yourself struggling with.)

- What am I succeeding at? (This will help you understand your own strengths! Are you really great at math? Do you love history? Think about what subjects interest you and where you are doing well. These places will require less of your energy, and your teacher's energy, but they will also give you a great idea of how you can try to understand the topics that are a little harder.)

- How am I studying? (What methods are you using to study? When are you doing your studying? What seems to be working, and what doesn't? What studying habits do you find difficult or boring? Do you think there is anything you are doing that isn't working for you?)

- What is going on in your life that might be affecting your learning? (This may seem like an unrelated question, and may even make some students or parents uncomfortable to talk about with a teacher. That's OK! Teachers are here to help, and if the student or parent finds this topic uncomfortable or even harmful to talk about, then they are more than welcome to keep it to themselves. But it is a very important question for students to talk about with their parents. The psychology of learning shows that many social and emotional factors can change the way we learn. Are you feeling stressed out in these current times? Overwhelmed by online learning? Do you feel lonely or separated from your classmates? Or maybe there are other issues affecting you. Has your family moved recently? Do you feel out of place? Do you feel pressure from yourself or others to succeed? When you struggle, are you hard on yourself? Is anything going on in your life to distract you? These, and many more questions, can help educators understand the best ways to help students; or, they can simply help parents of students decide on what kind of educator they need, without having to talk to them about these issues. Either way, it is important to consider how other areas of the student's life can impact their learning.)

- What are your goals? (Where do you want to see improvement, and how? Maybe you are making Cs right now, and your goal is to get a B; maybe you have a specific topic that you want to learn more about; maybe you struggle with test-taking, or essay-writing, or a specific task, and you want to get better. There are so many different ways that we want to see change. Identifying these goals is one way to help decide what kind of help you need. And if you are struggling to identify your goals, finding a teacher who will work with you and help you set goals is a great way to address that.)

Again, these are just some of the many important questions for students to ask themselves (and for teachers to ask their students!) - the most important thing is that students are able to communicate with their teachers so that even the needs they have a hard time addressing or identifying can be solved.
