About Laura

I’ve honed my one-on-one tutoring technique to help students of all ages improve their skills and become strong, confident writers. I coach my writers to be vigilant and conscientious of their own work and writing processes. My students are self-sufficient and authentic writers who communicate with the utmost clarity and intention. Creative assignments, insightful feedback centered on collaboration, and a whole-student, social-emotional approach are just the beginning of what I offer as your writing tutor!

Professionally trained at the University of Delaware Writing Center, I have five years of experience working with a wide range of students and a wide range of genres, including pieces 5th grade paragraphs about time travel to p.H.d theses about environmental engineering!

I love watching my students gain confidence in their communication skills. Good writing is all about clarity and authenticity--each writer has their own voice and I am always developing that voice in my students. Fostering a strong student-teacher relationship with my students is also a focus of one-on-one tutoring work. Because writing is about communicating your unique thoughts and ideas, my approach is centered on conversation. With this type of collaboration, I have developed a social-emotional approach to teaching and grow strong connections with my students.

I was formally trained at the University of Delaware Writing Center where I eventually became a leader peer tutor. Not only was I trained as a tutor but I also studied Writing Center Studies.

At UD, I was a music major and founded the UD Music Department Communication Lab, which was a writing center designed for the specific and unique needs of music majors. I trained music major peer tutors and oversaw all the operations of the lab.

About the lesson

First, I talk with the writer about their current challenges and their goals! What would they like to get out of the tutoring experience? What do they most want to work on? What about writing do they like or dislike the most?

I evaluate some of their past work to get a full picture of their writing level, and from there I create a writing program specially designed for that student.

I have worked with a wide range of students, from as young as third grade up to pHd students!
